Jane Stowe, Cindy Silver, Barbara Eiker, Jon Newman, Jean Neal, Ida Nelson, Ed Pinion, Joe Rielly, Van Vanuch, Judy Bart, Ann Winters, Kathryn Culler, Jody Stonestreet, Dick McMillan, Sherry Hartsog, David Johnston, Martin Mobley, Kitty Mc Caskill and Bruce Honick interviewed college, school and departmental head# about student participation on their committees. Chief of Reporters Alyce Youmans consolidated their reports into the following story. The law school has 18 com mittees-8 of them for students. The School of Business Ad. ministration has 20 committees. There is only one student member. Some smaller departments such as computer science are able to work without committees because there are few people involved, and a curriculum has not been established. The law school is committee oriented. With 10 student and eight faculty committees. The students run a committee which conducts a two day orientation for freshmen law students. There is also the Student Liaison Committee which meets with the faculty liaison committee to work out students' problems. The Student Building Committee recommends and arranges for improvements and meets with the faculty committee making plans with the University administration and architects for the new law building. The Publications Committee publishes a "placement annual" which contains information on all graduating law students and publishes a student newsletter "Gavel Raps." At the same time there is an Elections Committee it invob by depc that conducts elections for Student Bar Association officers. In addition to these student committees there Is one that arranges for the annual Law Day program, one that arranges speakers for programs during the year, one for publicity, one that arranges athletic events and the Social Committee that arranges four banquets a year. The College of Business Ad ministration is another committee oriented group. There are over 20 committees within the school. But, unlike the law school, only one student is on one committee. The arts and sciences has only one standing committee, the Academic Responsibility Com mittee but it has several students on it. Students take an active part in the math department. There is a faculty committee at the graduate level and a Graduate Student Advisory Committee which was proposed by the department but consists entirely of students and represents students in advising the faculty. The economics, psychology, ':istory, international studies, biology, music, chemistry, and political science departments have committees but no student par ticipation while the philosophy department is so small that they Classical studies Major A classical studies major added to the curriculum this summer will provide students a choice of several different areas of study. Students can combine classical civilization courses with classical languages. The major will be administered by the departments of English, foreign languages, history, philosophy and religion. Students would fulfill the language requrement by Greek or 7ement trtment work informally "over the coffee pot." The English department bas students working on 'or with several of their nine committees as does the School of Engineering. The foreign language department has only faculty committees but David G. Speer, head of the department, said, "We probably have not moved far in this direc tion (student participation) but the number of majorq in this depart ment has influenced this." The art department has only one committee but it is a student one. One department has as many student committees as faculty. In fact the music department has four student and four faculty com mittees. Even one small department is involved with committees. The geography department has two committees and both have student members or student involvemebt. And one school has a committee that is set up to study ways to get students involved in more ac tivities. The School of Journalism has a faculty committee for student involvement. Students are involved in two of the other ten committees. There are also several in terdepartmental committees. These committees discuss questions that cut across school boundaries. added Latin and would take 24 hours of ancient history, ancient philosophy, bibilical studies, Greek art, archaeology and the study of ancient coins. A cognate program also permits a student to major in classical studies without taking either Latin or Greek. Interested students may consult the members of the applicable departments.
