Netters Thincla Bobby Heald To Defend Singles Title The tennis team, defending ACC co-champions, head into this week end's conference tournament fresh from a tough 5.4 win over The Citadel. The Gamecock netters won four of six singles matches and one of three doubles contests Sunday af ternoon, but one of the casualties was number one man Bobby Heald, who dropped his second straight match. Defeated here S a tur d ay by North Carolina's Lee Langstroth, Heald fell to The Citadel's Tee Hooper by 6.2, 6-1 counts. It was Heald's third loss in his last four matches. The Black defensive unit goes like this: Jimmy Pope, left end; Jack Wright, left tackle, Mack Lee Tharpe at strong linebacker; Pat Kohout at middle guard; Randy Williams at weak linebacker; George McCarthy at right tackle; Don Brant at right end; Dick Harris at left half back; Jake Stone at rover; Jimmy Nash at safety, and Bill Duffle at right halfback. Nash, Stone, Harris and Kohout played on the fresh man team last fall. Lettermen Bill Parker, punter, and Billy DuPre, place kicker, will do the kicking for the Garnet squad. Kicking for the Black team will be rising sophomores Les Ballard, punter, and Tommy Bell, placekicker. After tonight's game, Coach Dietzel plans a cut, and the information about his players acquired from the game will be a determining factor as to who gets the axe. Sports Editor The Carolina tennis team left todlay for the ACC tourna ment, and among the netters are four graduating seniors who are going with the determination to bring home the ACC title ana leave USC something to remember them by. Th nheralded athletes came close to the title last y'ear but settling for a tie will not satisfy the team this y'ear. Stuart Reynolds, Bobby Heald, Henry Ragle and Jay Schlosser have helped Carolina compile a 58-7 overall record, and more than that, have madle tennis at Carolina a thing of the present. These four have caused tennis fans throughout the con ference to recognize Carolina as a tennis p)ower. We no longer have to take a second seat ; Carolina is tennis and tennis is Carolina. Coach Bill McClain predicts that "the matches will be tough and USC seeds will not be good, but with exceptional performance and good play out of all involved, we'll make it." One graduating team member expressed his feelings about the high team spirit. He said, "We work together, we win together, and we lose together, as a team." Carolina tennis fans (10 not realize that with these four graduating seniors we are losing, at least temp)orarily, the man who brought tennis to Carolina. Coach Bill McClain will be going to the University of Alabama to work on his doctorate degree. The man who built this winning team and their winning spirit will leave a position hard to fill. In leaving, McClain expressed his appreciation to all the many people at USC who were instrumental in making tennis a success at Caroliia. "I have enjoyed the first six years here and the watching of the tremendous growth which USC experienced during this time. I am looking forward to returning and having even better tennis teams," was McClain's departing remark. But how (10 we, the tennis fans of the Carolina Com munity say thanks to the man who gave us a tennis team and a tennis name to be proudl of? But Coach McClain will have even better teams when he returns. The recruits for next year include the number two, number four and number eight singles players in the East. Along with them come the number one doubles team in the East and the number twvo (division champion in the Florida high school competition. So tennis fans will have a team to look forward to in the future, and we will all look forward to the return of the man who carn make these champions into a winning team. In the meantime, with high hopes for the ACC tourna ment of 1969, we congratulate a winning team for the 1069 sasoan.
