Eleven members of the Lectures Committee were dismissed last week because of a letter they wrote. The letter contained no obscenities. It did not advocate the violent overthrow of the union. It listed no "demands." The members of the committee said they were dissatisfied with the way things are, but they would continue their work and hope for improvement. The union Board of Governors evidently found this expression intolerable. The censorship policy upon which the dismissal was based should never have existed. It is presumptuous and impractical. (Among the persons prohibited from expressing attitudes about union pol icy, organization or administration are "members or groups of members of the Student Union." The union Constitution de fines a member as "every student officially enrolled on the Columbia campus" who has paid activity fees.) Whether or not the union's powers-that be are aware of it, there are better means than censorship for responding to criticism. Krochmalny's leave begins the day of announcement of candidates in spring elections and ends the day after elec tions.
