The event, which is held on the Springdale Course, is sanctioned by the National Hunt and Steeple chase Association and the United Hunt Association. Often called the biggest social event in the two Carolinas, the meeting is the second or third spring competition for many of the nation's finest thoroughbreds. The afternoon of steeplechase and flat racing is highlighted by a three-mile race over timber on one of the world's most outstanding steeplechase courses. VALUABLE TROPHY According to a brochure pre pared by a Camden bank, the Carolina Cup is "reported to be intrinsically the most valuable in American racing. "An exquisite example of Queen Anne silver, the Cup was fash ioned in Ireland in 1702. The cup is a perpetual trophy, the winner of each year's race receiving a replica. shift lit Ota sol-sopi fee.Slty to.Al-otr *ie nsa1i Carolma ent, Is Sal "The story of the Carolina Cup began in an exhibition of silver and art objects conducted by Knoedlers, world famous art dealer, in London early in 1930. One of the spectators to see and admire the Cup at the exhibition was Harry D. Kirkover, who with Ernest Woodward helped estab lish the famed Carolina Cup Race. "A few months later, after his return to the United States, Kirk over saw the Cup again in New York in a chest of old silver newly arrived from England. NEW ADMIRER "The Cup found another admirer when Mr. Woodward, himself a collector of old silver, viewed the contents of the chest. Without knowledge that the Cup had ever been seen by his friend Kirkover, Woodward purchased the Cup ex pressly for the purpose it now serves. "The Cup was dedicated to Thomas Hitchcock of Aiken, who was considered the dean of Ameri can steeplechase horse breeders. "A transcending influence in the life of the race has been Mrs. Marion DuPont Scott of Mont pelier, Va., and Camden.
