Duke's sleeping giant, a team
that didn't awaken until the last
day of the regular season, 'nuiked
the Gamecocks out of the ACC
tournament with a 68-59 win Fri
day night.
The Blue Devils got an 18-point
performance from Dave Golden,
who hit on 9 of 12 shots from the
floor to pace all scorers with 18
points.
The Dukes moved the ball well
against the Gamecocks' zone,
with guard Dick DeVenzio's
floor leadership and sharp pass
ing the key to the offense.
DeVenzio found the open man
and the Blue Devils hit 55.6 per
cent of their shots to the Game
cocks' 39.2 per cent.
Down by as much as 10 early in
the second half the Gamecocks
fought back to cut the margin to
one several times in the last few
minutes.
John Ribock hit a jump shot to
make it 60-59 Duke, but then the
roof fell in on the Gamecocks.
Billy Walsh fouled DeVenzio and
the Duke guard was awarded two
shots for an intentional foul.
He hit both attempts, John
Roche missed a jump shot on
the Gamecocks' end of the court
and a DeVenzio pass found
Steve Vandenberg open under
the basket.
Golden swiped the ball and went
in for a layup that made it 66-59
with only 25 seconds remaining.
Roche managed to hit only four
of 17 shots from the floor, but was
a perfect nine for nine from the
foul line to lead the Gamecocks
with 17 points.
After the game, DeVenzio, sign
ing autographs outside the Duke
dressing room, commented, "I think
- he's ( Roche) a great ball player.
We used a special kind of defense.
We played man-to-man on Roche
'and Walsh outside andI a zone
under the basket."
The Gamecocks began the
game using their 3-2 offense
with Cremins out front behind
.the foul circle and Walsh and
Roche on either side of him.
tBut the Gamecocks weren't able
tto hit from the outside often
enough to pull the Blue D)evils out
r. from under the basket.
Walsh hit three of nine from the
r floor and Cremins hit four of 11.
With the Blue D)evils able to con
tcenitrate on clogging up the lane
a . they held Tom Owens to 10 points
andl seven rebounds.
