Amidst all the clamor and tumult over the heralded
USC-UNC rematch tomorrow night, one glaring essential ap
pears to defrock the contest of its cataclysmic consequence.
Putting aside the national rating polls, as far as the ACC
and a bid to the NCAA championships are concerned, the
game-win, lose or draw-will decide nothing.
True the winner will emerge top seeded in the ACC's
tourney, but in any other conference (with the exception
of the Southern) a victory tomorrow night would mean a
league championship and a bid to the NCAA outright.
So regardless of the outcome the titanic struggle be
tween the two teams for supremacy of the ACC must be
extended for another round.
A post-season tournament makes an exciting climax to
a dogfight season, but why should the league champions still
have to prove themselves after 15 games? And what hap
pens if somebody gets hot in the three-game tournament
and turns giant-killer?
It's happened before. In 1965 for example, N. C. State,
one of three teams tied for second place, made it to the
finals and upset nationally ranked Duke, thus winning the
right to represent the conference in the NCAA's. State was
then eliminated in the early going of the NCAA Eastern
Regionals.
Indeed, the ACC possesses a truly magnanimous spirit
with regard to its "tired and its poor"-providing a chance
for redemption to the likes of Maryland, Virginia and Clem
son who, despite their sub-par records, could yet carry off
all the marbles.
Unlikely, yes, but nonetheless tomorrow night's victor
need not breathe easy-for to them, all the spoils will not
go.

Frank McGuire's steamrolling
Gamecocks unleashed their omnip.
otent offensive arsenal in the sec
ond half and outclassed Virginia,
84;-70, in a fast-paced, bruising
roughhouse affair Saturday night
before a sellout crowd at the Caro
lina Coliseum.
The victory, USC's ninth in a
row, got revenge for an earlier set
back by the Cavaliers in Char
lottesville.
Despite another sterling effort
by classy high-scoring backcourt
ace John Roche, the crucial dif
ference in the two contests had to
be a full game performance by
John Ribock as McGuire firmly ad.
mitted:
"We needed Ribock in them
the entire game. Unlike up there
when we lost J o h n because of
fouls, this time he made the dif.
ference."
While Ribock accounted for only
three points, he virtually policed
the key area and pulled in a game
pacing 15 rebounds.
Meanwhile, USC, holding their
own in the crunching heavy traffic
under the boards, was able to capi
talize on Roche's sharpshooting,
Billy Walsh's clutch bank shots
and Tom Owens' layups under the
basket.
After the game McGbire com
pared Walsh's clutch bank shots
to those of his former North Caro
lina superstar Lennie Rosenbluth.
Walsh played on a severely painful
ankle, but was still able to match
Roche in some fancy behind-the
back and between-the-legs ball han
dling late in the game as Virginia
came out in an aggressive zone
press.
McGuire also unveiled another
weapon in the contest-the shoot
ing Bob Cremin&-who came up
with 12 points including two jump
shots at the outset of the second
half which put Carolina comfort.
