C. State's stall tactics and defeat the Wolfpack 45-35 in the final game of the 1969 North-South Double header. Carolina took the opening tip and scored on a Billy Walsh jump shot 30 seconds into the game. State came back and held the ball 4:38 before losing the ball out of bounds on a bad pass. The Gamecocks, again capitaliz ing on Walsh's outside sharpshoot ing, went out in front 4-0 with 14:06 left in the first half. Norm Sloan's forces continued their stall tactics, challenging the sophomore-studded Gamecocks with a maneuver that had not been tried by any other opponent this season. Rather than rattling USC the stall provided McGuire's Iron Five with a much-needed rest, and they stayed in their usual zone defense for five minutes before coming out in a man-to-man to force State's hand. 'Te half ended with the Game cocks holding a 20-12 advantage that State was never able to over come. Moving their offense into second gear after intermission State was unable to capitalize on what Sloan had considered to be the Game cocks' main weakness, John lZibock. "We figured Rlihock was the one man who couldn't shoot for them, but after he connected so many times from the top of the key, we realized that they all can shoot," Sloan said after the game.
