Busing
The busing situation at Carolina has changed for the
better in the last few weeks, but the situation is still grim,
to say the least.
The new school-operated bus making the rounds of the
campus every half hour can mean a lot to those who live at
the Roost or Capstone and do not care to drive to classes at
the other end of campus.
This one service, however, does not hide the fact that
on-campus, not just day students, are commuting students.
The APO escort bus, one of the few constructive efforts
to solve the problems of campus expansion, is also having
its problems. Most of them occur at South where the girls'
dates park their cars in the loading zone and the bus cannot
park. APO suggests $15 parking tickets for that area.
Such an action is probably a little radical for the prob
lem, and a better idea might be to mark bus stops (with
signs and colored parking places) at all the girls' dorms.
Youthfare
Somewhere on the Civil Aeronautics Board there is a
man who has a son or daughter he does not like.
This man has convinced others, none of whom could have
been too objective, that youthfare discounts to college stu
dents should be discontinued.
To some this will be only an inconvenience, to others it
will mean fewer trips home, and to a few it might mean
going to another school because of cost and the wish to go
home occasionally.
Our friend in the CAB is just the kind of nice person to
condemn hitchhiking and making long, tiresome trips by car.
We hope somebody has something to gain from the dis
continuation, because neither college students, their parents
nor the country could possibly gain a thing.

Dear Mr. Kroehmalny:
In Fred Magner's editorial
"Brotherhood" it ig obvious that
indeed he did not look very far
to find that there are no blacks
in a Carolina fraternity. He
didn't look very far at all, for if
he had he would have found that
no blacks have ever registered
for rush even though it is open
to all. No blacks have ever
rushed; no blacks have ever
been refused brotherhood. So if
no blacks have ever been refused,
I can find no grounds for his
charge that we are a prejudiced
group.
I would like to point out that
in Carolina's fraternities there
are Catholics, Protestants, Jews,
Mormons, a Moslem and people
with no religious beliefs. We
have as brothers northerners,
southerners, I t a 1 i a n s, Irish,
Arabs and Puerto Ricans.
I'm sure you realize that fra
ternities have no monopoly on
narrow-mindedness. Some people
have turned anti-fraternity be
cause they were never selected
as a brother even though they
came through rush.

I recently read a statement in
the State-Record on Sunday. It
said "the people of South Caro
lina deserve big time basketball."
Maybe so, but what they really
need is big time education. In
stead of spending $12,000,000.00
for a basketball coliseum, why
not spend it on education. After
all, the purpose of a college is to
educate people, not entertain
them. At least that is what the
"Establishment" keeps telling us.

To begin I would dis'inguish
between student government and
the Student Senate. Many feel
that the Senate has been only a
vestigial organ of student gov
ernment. The Senate has often
proven to be only a battleground
for personality clashe3. Its at
tainments have been predomi
nantly minor. Valuable accom
plishments have been rare.
I propose to the senators what
may be a new idea. We, the Sen
ate, must think of ourselves ais a
creating center of the student
body whose fundamental purpose
is to construct new and positive
solutions to relevant problems at
Carolina.
I suggest three problem areas
for this student body, each area
commending itself well to the
attention of the Senate. A funda
mental problem at Carolina is
the intensity of conflicting group
sentiments which undermine the
social obligations which every
member should have to the en
tire student body. This unfor
tunate situation is being perpet
ienate
uated by probably all but the
most apathetic people here.
However, It affects everyone
at Carolina considerably. The
Senate could well explore solu
tions to this problem.
A second problem area would
be the educational structure it
self of the University. With the
evident dissatisfaction for the
traditional way that a man or
woman is educated, it would be
reasonaule that a creative Sen
ate should crystallize the dis
content and pose some fresh,
realistic alternatives to what Is
deficient in the system.
Finally, I think the student
government could take an active
role in the public relations work
of the University. The depend
ence of the student body on com
munity opinion is only too ob
vious. We must not allow our
selves a careless attitude when
the public is forming a preju
dicial image of this student body.
I hope the Senate will stop to
reevaluate itself now in the
middle of the year and will re
solve to search out problem
areas seriously, grapple intelli
gently with problems, and finally
come up with new solutions that
will keep Carolina progressing.
