By BILL MADDEN Staff Writer "DUST FOOTBALL" "Four yards and a cloud of dust"-give or take a fev yards-is the jargon that is attributed to ball control foot ball by many astute observers of the game. A few years ago-1960 to be exact-Carolina relieve4 a very fine head football coach, Warren Giese, from hi position for employing the ball control tactics with th Gamecocks. The opinion somewhere up in the USC hierarchy wa that Giese's brand of football-even though it won games was dull and uninteresting. "Dust football" returned to Carolina Stadium, Satur day night, despite a deluge from the heavens overlook ing Columbia, in the person of Jerry Claiborne and his Virginia Tech Gobblers. And Claiborne, like Giese be fore him, proved that "dust football" wins games. Ball control is a very simple operation, but it doesn' work unless you have the horses. For VPI, the horses were a big, strong, agile offensiv line and a couple of bulls to follow their blocks. There was never really much doubt as to the eventua outcome of the contest once everything began to get under way. VPI was a well polished, finely tuned football machini that played good plain hard-nosed football. They controlled the game from the start, meticulousl grinding out yard after yard, picking up the first downi and eventually scoring. For USC, it can be said in all honesty, no one played a bad game. Suggs passed well, Muir ran well, and Al Usher and Tyler Hellams were extremely effective on defense. Virginia Tech was simply a better team and they proved it. The loss, however, could prove to be costly. First, thi loss of Fred Zeigler, with a broken collarbone, who playe( perhaps his most brilliant game yet, cannot help but put crimp in the offense against Clemson. Second, the momentum that had begun to gather wit] the Virginia and Wake Forest victories has now beei brought to a screeching halt. For Paul Dietzel the task that lies ahead this week i. not an enviable one. He must regroup his forces and bring them together tc face another brand of "dust football"-the Buddy Gor< style. And up at Death Valley all the marbles will be on th( table. For USC it will be the salvaging point for a disap pointing season. For Clemson it will be for the ACC cham pionship.
