Tech may have the best defen.
r sive unit that USC has faced all
year.
a Coach Jerry Claiborne, like Paul
, Dietzel, is a product of the Bear
Bryant "School of Football" at
e Kentucky where both coaches were
y assistants.
In fact, they have been winning
- games with their defense as well
as with their offense. It was pass
d interceptions that helped the Gob
b hlers defeat a tough West Virginia
team, and pass steals also carried
them over Florida State.
They lost a squeaker at the be
ginning of the season to Alabama,
14-7, but their offense has come
a long way since then.
The biggest boost to their of
fense has been the move of line
backer Ken Edwards to fullback.
In three g a m e s, the 6'1, 205
pound b) a c k has picked up 348
yards in 38 carries and has snared
five passes for 63 yards and one
score.
Tailback T e r r y Smoot is a
strong inside r u n n e r, and has
bulled for 546 yards thus far this
season.
Quarterback Al Kincaid doesn't
resort to throwing the ball much,
but when he has, he has done so
accurately.
The junior QB has thrown 93
times with 45 completions.
His favorite receiver has been
split end Danny Cupp who has
caught 16 passes for 238 yards.
Their kicking game is another
strong point with a 39.8 yard punt
ing average and 50 percent accu
racy on field goals without a miss
in the PAT department.
Paul Dietzel said they will try to
"take away what you do best."
That means they'll be trying to
stop Tom Suggs from throwing
the ball, or trying to snatch it
away from Gamecock receivers.
Benny Galloway may only see
limited action and1 it is not known
if Benny Padgett will be able to
play. Both s u s t a i n e d injuries
against Wake Forest.
