Center Profile
Gunter's department is involved with service, and the Center's other
division, headed by Dr. William J. Eccles, is involved with education
and research.
The data processing center serves the administration by controling
student records, working for the registrar's office, executing work
orders and housing records of alumni.
From the time a student first applies to the University, his rank
in class, his board scores and his grades are punched on cards and
stored permanently on magnetic tape. From that time on, the student's
records, including grades, hours, and grade point ratios, are constantly
recorded and updated. These records are available only to the admin
istration.
The computer does not determine whether a student is accepted to
college or whether he stays, it merely stores and makes available the
information on his progress. Class roles, mid-term grades and regis
tration are handled by the computer also.
In the registrar's office, data processing works on monthly accounts
and the University payroll. Student fees are audited and broken down
by the computer.
Gunter explained how the computer serves and protects the student
by running match-backs on fees. A student may be refunded nioney
or the computer may find the student has not paid in full.
le said there vas little trouble in this area and that the systen
works well, but if a student is in doubt about grades or fees he should
inquire. The computer, which is operated by humans, is not incapablb
of error, Gunter added.
For protection and convenience the computer keeps student record.
by using Social Security numbers. This is a number no other indi.
vidual will have even if there are two people on campus with the sami
birthdate. If a teacher confuses two students or accidentally record.
a wrong grade, the error could be taken care of by matching bacl
these numbers.
Gunter is now involved in plans for a student information bureau
It would include, among other activities, information on fraternitie:
and sororities. 'This information would be accesslible, with permISSIOT
from the administration, to organizations or individuals who need it
