W h e n Paul Dietzel fields hi
young Gamecocks tomorrow nigh
he'll have seven sophomores on h
starting defensive unit.
Earlier in .the season, Dietz
had said that for every soph ye
a t a r t, give the opposition si
points.
Going by this theory, the Cava.
lers will have a 60 point advan.
tage before the Gamecocks take
the field.
Dietzel will be going with t}
same starting unit which nearl
upset Florida State last week.
When he looks across the fiel
up in Virginia, the USC mento
will be seeing an old friend i
Coach Blackburn.
Dietzel was playing b all at
Miami when Blackburn was an
assistant coach there. Since that
time they have coached together
at a number of universities.
"Blackie is a very good frien
and our families are very close,
said Dietzel.
"But last year Virginia didn'
leave town in the best frame o
mind. It was a goofy game an
we came out on top 24-23 afte
being shut out in the first half,
said Dietzel.
The Carolina coach said that he
doesn't like to single out outstand
ing individuals in a loss, because
a losn is everybody's loss.
But he did praise the quarter
backing of Tommy Suggs, the run
ning of Benny Galloway, and Bo
Mauro.
Mauro, converted to the cente
position this year, graded a fan
tastic 98 percent in his gam
against Florida State.
For his efforts he was named
the ACC Lineman of the Week.
At his weekly press conferenc
Tuesday, Dietzel also q u i p p e
about Fred Zeigler.
"He's a lot better football play
er than we thought he was. A
Maryland he was the only on
who had sure' footing. He mus
wear a size 16 shoe."

South Carolina's unbeaten and
untied frosh will try to keep their
slate clean in tonight's wrap-up
game at Furman.
Coach Pride Ratterree's t e a in
demolished Wake Forest 35-3 last
week to run their record to 4.0.
If the Biddies win tonight it will
he the second unbeaten frosh squad
in two years.

Carolina's Gamecocks p 1 a y at
Virginia tomorrow on a day that
may decide the ACC champ.
At this time N. C. State is at
the top of the conference and they
meet Clemson, the number two
team, in Raleigh tomorrow.
The Cavalien have only one
loss in the ACC but a victory by
the Gamecocks w o u I d virtually
knock them out of contention.
If State can stop Clemson, they
will have the title almost wrapped
up.
Virginia's statistics look over
powering. They have gained 2,486
yards in total offense, over 420
yards per game.
ir The Cavaliers h a v e outscored
their opposition 168 points to 97.
This statistic is even more potent
when the fact that they lost their
first contest to Purdue, 44-6, isl
added.
Virginia mentor George Black
burn has built his potent offensive
machine around the rushing of
Frank Quayle and Jeff Anderson.
These two big backs have aver
aged 200 yards per game by them
selves, scoring ten TD's on the
k ground.
e Quayle also leads the Cavaliers
in pass receiving with 18 for 233
yards.
The Virginia back also scored
on one of t h o s e Gene Arnette
passes.
Arnette has completed nearly 50
f percent of his tosses for 588 yards
1 and eight scores.
The Virginia quarterback will
be returning to his home town of
Charlottesville after three games
on the road.
Carolina coach Jackie Powers,
who scouted the Cavaliers, said at
Coach Paul Dietzel's press confer
ence Tuesday that the entire team
is anchored by seniors.
Senior tackles Paul Rogers and
Gregg Shelly give experience to
the front offensive line that blocks
for Arnette and his running backs.
On de fe n se, linebacker Bob
Paczkoski, another senior, a n d
Peter Schmidt, a junior who has
had six interceptions in as many
games, will be leading the Cava
liers against the Gamecock.
Virginia is a team that likes to
use the blitz and Tommy Suggs -
may well have to resort to his
scrambling tactics.
0 n e consolation for Carolina
fans is the Cavalier kicking game.
They have not made a field goal
all year, and are only six for 14
in the PAT dlepartment.

Benny Galloway looked like a million against Florida
State as he ran for good yardage and set a school record
,or pass receptions with 11.
At the beginning of the season, Paul Dietzel had visions
)f a healthy Galloway and a potent Warren Muir in the
;ame backfield.
Unfortunately it didn't quite work that way. Benny was
iobbling around on a bad ankle as the season opened and
ie banged it up in the UNC game.
When he started coming around, two knees of a defensive
)layer in the back of Warren Muir put the best inside
unner in the country out of action.
Now it looks like Warren will be seeing limited duty in
;omorrow's game with Virginia.
It has been a month since he has been in action, and it
vill be some time yet before he is himself.
Warren's month away from the team has been lonely
it times. It has been my pleasure to know him and his
vife Patty.
Patty has always been one of Warren's biggest boosters
tnd a Gamecock Sports Staffer, Jo Bland, talked with her
tnd had the following comments:
When the mechanisms of a great athlete are dam
aged, who is his behind-the-scenes support? Who re
places his fans in cheering him on to a fast recovery? In
Warren Muir's case, it has been his high school sweet
heart and wife, Patty Muir.
Warren suffered a back injury in the USC-Georgia
game, and his present activities consist of jogging
around the practice field with a "touch-me-not" red
cross attached to his jersey.
Patty has done a tremendous job in moral and
physical support. She put on his shoes and socks for
him and went about her activities with a cheerful
attitude that is unsuppressed even when she speaks to
strangers.
Asked how she felt confined to the stands with
Warren, Patty knowing how badly Warren wants to
play, summed it up in one word, "miserable."
There is no assurance that te Massachusetts junior
will compete against the Cavaliers Saturday; but you
can be sure that he and Patty will be present, experi
encing inwardly the struggle for victory taking place
on the field.
