Basketball practice got underway Tuesday, and som(
young players are at the beginning of a difficult year.
Frank McGuire only has one starter returning from lasi
year's squad, Bobby Cremins.
The starting lineup will see three or four sopho
mores going against some of the best in the nation
this year.
Whether or not the ACC places a team in the national
rankings in football is still to be seen. Virginia has recently
received mention, but they haven't exactly been playing
powerhouses.
It'll be a different story when the ACC turns to the
hardwoods. North Carolina may very well make it back to
the NCAA finals to get knocked down by the Uclans again
this year.
Duke is always a power to be reckoned with, and it
will be one or two years before USC beats them twice
in one season again.
McGuire's boys might have talent and potential, but
they're going to have to learn college ball the hard way
on the court against seasoned competition.
As the saying goes, sophs are erratic and they'll win
some they shouldn't win and lose some they should win, but
they'll be learning. That's what we can look forward to.
Thus far McGuire hasn't found the man to lead the
team, someone to spark life into them on the court.
Bobby Cremins had a fantastic year last year, but
he had some help from four good ones, three of whom
are now in pro ball.
It isn't the year of the Gamecock yet. Paul Dietzel is
playing boys who are so small that the offensive and de
fensive lines of Georgia and State ran right over them.
And Frank McGuire is going to have to deal with inex
perience and some weight problems on his team.
It's nice to have a boy who's 6-10 playing for you,
but in the ACC you've got to take some good pounding
under the boards. Skinny kids can get hurt.
Carolina does have one thing though. Both the football
and the forthcoming basketball teams are exciting tc
watch.
Warren Muir, when he's healthy, and Fred Zeigler put
on quite a show on the football field. McGuire likes the
type of basketball that pleases the fans, while still coming
up a winner. You'll be seeing more of the Jack Thompson
brand of behind-the-back passes this year.
You can get a good preview of things to come in the
Carolina Coliseum by stopping by the Naval Armory
from 3:30 to 5:00 and catching a look at basketball
practice.
McGuire said Tuesday, "I tell the boys they don't havc
to know when they're doing something right, the crowd will
tell them."

The Gamecocks will be facing
one of their toughest contests to
morrow as they face the Mary
land Terrapins.
Before Carolina can think about
Itheir opponents they must make
up their minds that they are a
football team, a better one than
the one which lost to State last
week.
And the Terrapins aren't to be
taken lightly themselves.
Maryland Coach Bob Ward
finally found the key to victory
last week against UNC in snap
ping a 16-game losing streak.
As a result, the Terrapins are
riding high, so high in fact, that
it took Ward an hour to get to his
locker room after the UNC win.
FANS GO WILD
Fans went wild and tore down
both sets of goal posts after the
contest. The enthusiasm should
be high as the Gamecocks arrive
in College Park.

Hodge again was the top scorer
with two goals, and seven for
wards each scored one: Emanuel,
Parra, deC Oliveira, Dias, Ungaro,
Collins, and O'Farrell. The op
position contributed by kicking
one ball into their own goal.
Next week Carolina meets the
Charlotte Soccer Club and is in
the process of scheduling games
with Columbia Bible College,
Shaw AFB, Voorhees College, and
various other clubs. It is hoped
that the largely freshman team
(11 frosh) will show more con
sistency as the season progresses.
