"Georgia is the kind of team that
defensively likes to maul you," said
USC Coach Paul Dietzel in speak
ing of the Gamecocks' Saturday
night opponent.
Offensively, according to Dietzel
and assistant coach Johnny Men
ger, the Bulldogs have always liked
to "run the ball down your throat."
This year, though, Georgia has
added a potent passing attack to
a4d to their deadly running game.

The University's rugby t e a m,
formed only last spring, overpow
ered and outplayed a more experi
enced Clemson squad as they kicked
r off their 10-game fall schedule
with a 20-16 upset over the Tigers
at Clemson.
USC, with five of the 15 players
4 (no substitutes allowed) being in
n troduced to the game only a week
earlier, came from behind three
times to finally put d9wn the Clem
son team which, by the way, had
five English students playing for
them.
The Gamecocks played with 15
Americans, thirteen of which, as
of last spring, had never played,
or as in some cases, had never
heard of the game of rugby.
Clemson opened up the scoring
midway the first half, but USC
quickly tied the score as Mark Katz
bolted into the end zone dragging
three Clemson players with him.
Both extra points, worth two
points each, were good and so at
c the halftime, the score was tied
e at five apiece.
e Early in the secondl half, Clen.
e son scored its second try (a try is
eqjuiv-alent to a touchdown in Amer
iran football, but worth only thri
e points). Again the G;amecocks came
b ack with a try scoredl on a fine
run by Norman Lack, playing in
his first game.

Steve .\illlot and Sandy Frazier
added-i two morie try-s for the Game
1" cocks, with Johin G reenaway kick
e ing two more r-xt ra points.
The Tigers came back late in
X the fmnal minutes with another try,
ebut missed the conversion andl the
final score was 20-16.
