To help alleviate this deficiency SC is establishing a graduate hool in social work, scheduled to gin classes in September 1969 ider the direction of Dr. Joseph Hlungate. The program will be basically i two-year curriculum requir ing 60 semester hours for a master's of social work. The ,ichmol will he a separate pro ressional school, accreditated by the Council on Social Education, the accrediting body for grad uate social work education. GRAD COURSES Courses will not be open to ndergraduates but will be oper 0 graduate-; in other areas. Allen, professor of social work and director of community ser vices; and )r. Maxwell A. Cook, professor of social work and di rector of field work. All three are formerly of the Uni%ersity of Texas. FIELD PRACTICE The curriculum seeks to com bine classroom instruction with practical application of class room techniques. During the first year students will attend class the first three days of the week and work with a social agency on Thursday and Fri day. While working with these agen cies the students will be given I selected cases to work with and will be supervised by their pro fessor. During the second year the procedure will he reversed. Classroom ins-ruction will be on Thur.sday and Friday and agency work on Monday. Tuesday and Friday. GREAT DINIAND The pressing need for such a school was emphasized by I)r. Cook. He stated, "There is a de mnand for 12,000 master's degree social workers each year. Schools can now develop 4,000 each year." South Carolina is one of the t few states that did not have a School of Social Work in 1967. USC once had a two-year pro r gram, but it was closed in 1954. - The school is located in tempo rary headquarters at 1619 Green Street.
