A prominent characteristic of
great athletic teams of the recent
past has been their ability to
capitalize on their opponents' mis
takes and weaknesses.
Once the New York Yankees,
Green Bay Packers or Boston
Celtics found that fault they knew
they would win.
Last Saturday night at Caro
lina Stadium it was evident that
Duke's defenders would have
great difficulty in containing the
Gamecocks' high-powered, wide
open offense. Five times (luring
the second half the offense moved
down near the Duke goal line.
They were unable to take ad
vantage of the Blue Devils' yield
ing defense, and they came out a
loser.
Like great teams, however, the
'Cocks did not lose their com
posure when their opponents
gained the early 14- advantage.
Duke was doing nothing fancy
in moving for their two touch
downs. Quarterback Leo Hart
simply was faking a running play
with his backs, then throwing to
his receiNers who had delayed for
two or three seconds before ex
ecuting their pass patterns.
Carolina's defensive backs took
a bit too much time in adjustiing,
however, and the I)uke offense
lost no time capitalizing on it.
There is a defnite trend in col
lege football towards wide open,
high-powered offensive football.
In keeping with this trend, Coach
Paul Dietzel and his assistants
decided last spring to open up
the offense with wide set receiv
ers and a split backfield.
D)uring the spring and fall, the
'Cocks ii,ved the ball up and
down the field. This ability was
shovn again as the 'Cock; miioved
into scoring territory with rela
tive ease on the runni.ig of Rudy|
Holloman, Warren Muir and len
Gallow%-ay and the pass-receiving
of Fred Zeigler, Ed Bolton and
John Gregory.
Quarterbacks Randy Yoakuni
and Tommy Suggs sowed great
imagination in leading Carolina
to scoring territory within the
Duke 20-yard line.
On the crucial situations, how%-.
ever, the Gamecocks inexperienced
line seemed unable to give Muir
and Galloway those extra few
feet which would have resulted
in first downs and probable touch
dovns.
Once adjusted, the defense was
most effective, and once the of
fensive personnel gain a bit more
experience and polish in execu
tion. USC will have a good foot
ball team.
Psychology also plays such a
vital role in football as seen with
the NFL New Orleans Saints. In
their first season, the team lacked
the manpower to compete with
the estalished teams.
However, the 75,0001 loyal and
enthusiastic fans stayed, with the
Saints no matter what the score
or time shoowing on the score

impossible without their fans.
