Edit The P Last week "The Pass Key" appeared on the USC campus. "The Pass Key" is the handbook of the Preston Residence Area, published by the PRA Government. We see it as another sign of the interest and concern of the student to become in volved, to make his years at college more than four years in a classroom. There are other signs: the growing im portance and responsibilities of the Asso ciated Women Students and the Inter-Dorm Council, newsletters published by several dorms, intramural sports between dorms, dorm-sponsored social functions, and an increasing number of dorm-sponsored service projects, such as Halloween and Christmas parties for children from local orphanages. USC residence halls are members of the National Association of College and Uni versity Residence H a 1 1 s (NACURH), founded on the precept that students active in residence halls can make a positive con tribution to the educational process. The entire city reflects a spirit for Carolina football. It's too bad that this enthusiasm hasn't rubbed off on the students at USC. It's hard for me to find a reason to want to attend another Carolina game when the student body only seems to attend as a social function. I feel badly that Paul Dietzel and his Gamecocks don't have the backing of the students at Carolina. Lawrence said this mail will break down into letters, cards and pr.eckages coming in on the average of 16,000 to 18,000 a day. There are two post offices on campus, the larger at Russell House, and a smaller substation at Capstone. Another substation is at the Gamecock Roost, to be completed in November. When Lawrence came to Caro lina as a student in 1937, the post office was in Legare Col lege. It then housed 1,100 boxes for the 1,600 students. Later it was moved into the basement of Maxcy College, where the print ing shop is now located. By November there will be a total of 5,900 post office boxes on campus: 700 at Capstone, 100 at the Roost and the remainder at Russell House; more boxes will be added at Cliff House. Eight full-time employees and twelve part-time student assist ants are now at work in the campus Post Office. The part time assistants usually acquire their jobs through the Director of Student Aid or through the recommendation of one of the office employees.
