Problems in distributing ath
letic coupon books have left the
Carolina ticket office in "a little!
predicament."
According to Ralph Floyd, ath
letic business manager, under
classmen have been able to obtain
senior and junior ticket books be
cause this year's student I) cards
do not identify a student by class.
As a result, many upperclass
men have had difficulties ob
taining coup)on books and date
tickets scheduled for their
classes.
Floyd said the athletic de
p)artment was "very discour
aged" that the "honor system
of distributing tickets" had not
been~ successful this year.
lie saidl there were two ap
proaches which could help allevi
ate the prob)lemn in the future. The
University could issue ID) cards
with a studlent's p)icture and his
class standling, or ID)'s for eaceh
class could have different colors,
he saidl.
By Tuesday night, nearly all

the 2,000 date books reserved
for students had been bought.
But Floyd said more date books
probably would go on sale Fri
day and would be available to
all classes.
The athletic department allots
11,200 tickets for Carolina stu
deits, plus 2,000 date books.
Floyd also asked underclass
men who received senior or jun
ior hooks to pick up their tickets
according to their own class in
stead of the class of the hook.
"l;ven though a student may
have a senior or junior book,"' he
saIid, "we wish they would pick
up their tickets on the right day
for their class."

Tim Bice, a senior, from At

from Madison, New Jersey, will
captain the Gamecocks in their
opener against Duke.
Bice is a middle guard who won
All-ACC honors as a weakside
linebacker last year. In the 1967
season Bice made 90 individual
tackles.
The senior middle guard has
his weight up to 194 pounds and
has been chosen by many sports
writers to repeat his All-ACC
status. Ilis added weight should
help him up in the line.

There are 11 seniors on the
squad and each week one or two
will be chosen as game captain
by Coach Dietzel.
The seniors are called "Black
IHlats" because they wear black
helmets on the practice field to
distinguish them from the white
helmeted underclassmen.
At the end of the season a
permanent captain will be chosen.

The Blue Devils of Duke Uni
versity will come to Carolin
Stadium tomorrow night to d
battle with the Gamecocks
It will he the opening game 01
the season for both teams.
First Assistant Coach Larry
Jones sized up the Blue Devils
at a press conference Tuesday.
"They have the best set of
receivers, the best balanced, in
the league," said Jones.
"Henley Carter gave us fits
last year. He caught three passes
right near the end when Duke
was driving for a score that
would have heaten us."
"And Jim Death is an excellent
pro prospect. He was the onc
who heat Army last year wit!
his clutch catches," added Jones
Duke has nine lettermen back
on defense and six starters and
nine lettermen returning to the
offensive squad.
The Blue Devil fullback, Don
Baglien, will have his hands
full trying to take the place of
Jay Calabrese, but Jones said
he "should start right where
Calabrese left off."
Duke has been a team that re
lies only on a small number ol
plays. Their brand of football i!
execution, not razzle dazzle.
The Gamecocks, according t
Coach Paul Dietzel should be
better team than last year's.
Two All-ACC players will b(
bolsi.:.,ing this year's squad.
A third former All-ACC
choice, Benny Galloway will be
returning to the field after be
ing out a year due to injuries.
All-ACC linebacker Tim Bice
and All-ACC fullback Warren
Muir form a solid nucleus of
leadership and talent.
Fred Zeigler will be starting at
flankerback. He led the A4CC in
:-atches last year.
Johnny Gregory has been
mnovedl from tight endl to split
endl, while Bob Mauro has beer
moved from offensive tackle tc
the center position.
Gene Schwarting will he mov
ing into the tight end spot
hacatedl by Gregory.
The Ganmecocks' defensive
secondary remains much the
same as last year with the ex
ception of some p)romising
sophomores in Rusty Ganas and
Tyler Hellams.
Coach D)ietzel has termedl Duke

To make matters worse Diet
zel said that Dan Harbison
made the best showing in last
Saturday's scrimmage.
"I'd never be afraid to play
any of the three," said Dietzel.
Yoakumn is 6-1 andl weighs in at
187 poundIs. Suggs is quite a bit
ihorter, standing 5-9 at 176
pounds. Hiarbison is a junior from
Washington, D). C. who weighs
182 and stands 5-11.
"lHoth Suggs and Yoakum are
ine gentlemen off the field and
'ine studlents in the classroom.
3oth are fine leaders, hut there
he similarity stops. They arc
wo dlifferent types of quarter
