only the first step along the way to

Eighth ranked N. C. State loses

lack of personnel.
The Gamecocks will return

Combes has already predicted
how his team will perform this
weekend, but he points out that
there are certain factors which
cannot be counted.
"These fellows are really fired
up," said Combes. "They remember
how close we came to beating both
Maryland and UNC. We should get
about 410 points with N. C. State
pulling 480, and North Carolina
getting 380."
The young coach went on to say
that he expected close to 100 points
from the divers alone.

In contrast to Laughlin's experi
ence is the flamboyant enthusiasm
of freshman John Thoder. Thoder
presents substantial credentials of
his own. He was Prep School All
America and has, on occasion,
beaten Laughlin in competition.
While definitely contributing
to the USC cause, Chic Lang

ciently from his shoulder injury
to regain top form.
Laugnehs was second in diving
in the ACC his sophomore year and
did not compete last year. He
figures as a sure third in a possi
ble Carolina sweep of the diving.
Freshman Jack Moffatt has to
get the determination award for
the year. Moffatt has improved to
the point that he may finish as
high as fourth if the right breaks
fall his way.
No matter what order they fin

lead the way as the Fighting Game
