a letter by Homer L. Loflin of
Ramseur, N. C., in the Feb. 9
sports column of Greensboro Daily

Loflin's letter claimed to evalu
ate the sportsmanship of Coach
Frank McGuire, Gamecock fans,
and the University students and
officials on the basis of the Duke
ra(lio network account of the
)uke-USC game this year.
L,oflin wrote that Coach Frank
McGuire is "a very successful
basketball coach and has a team
capable of defeating Duke on
Duke's home court or any other
ACC team on their home court.
"ut it is inconceivable that
Coach McGuire and the University
officials dto not strive for better
behavior and conduct of their stu
dent body and fans on their home
court.
"Evidlently they rely on their
rudleness as tactics and strategy
in helping to win."
Hie goes on to claim that the
D)uke players were threatened
with bodily harm andl "harassed
to e'xtremes" on their arrival
and departure. He is amazed
that the D)uke players main
tained their poise.
Hie claims that p)art of the
harassment was instigated by
Coach McGuire out of spit' over
the handling of the Mike Grosso
case, in which "he was justified
in being defeated."
"Under existing circumstances,"
I,oflin concludes, "I would not
p)ermit a son of mine to attendl
the University of South Carolina
if he were offered a full basket
ball scholarship."'
Harrier's only comment on the
letter was: "Well, UJSC moves
into a brand new, 12,000-seat
Coliseum next season."
Coach D)ietzel wrote in his re
