Even in Durham.
Yes, even in Durham the praises of the Gamecocks were
being sung after last week's victory over the Blue Devils.
"Any way you slice it, Duke's trip to Columbia, S. C.,
Tuesday had to rank as something of a milestone," wrote
Alex Crockett in his Random Comments column in the Dur
ham Herald after the game. "It was a costly loss for the
Blue Devils, but it could have signaled the beginning of a
new and better era of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball
competition."
Sketching the last upset of the Dook squad in the
USC Field House and the conduct of the fans and Game
cocks last week, he concluded, "It proved that rabid
partisanship and out-and-out disorder do not have to go
-' hand-in.-hand, and it indicated the stranglehold Big Four
teams have held on the ACC basketball title may be
nearing an end."
Crockett mentioned the apprehension some of the team
felt in playing at Carolina after the Grosso dispute. It was,
he wrote, well founded-on the court. Duke was beaten.
"This South Carolina team is for real. It's capable of
beating almost anybody on a given night. It was not an
'off' night for Duke. The Blue Devils played well. The
Gamecocks played better.
"So far as the fans at South Carolina are concerned,
Tuesday night's game indicated that progress is being
made in the stands as well as on the court." Crockett
claimed that one reason for the better fan behavior is
that USC has "learned to compete" on the court. Now
that the Gamecocks must be contended with for the
title, he theorized that fans no longer are inclined to
misbehave.
"The cheering was loud and vociferous. That's the way
it should be," he wrote. But, he criticized the names called
Coach Bubas and his team. "There is no place in the realm
of good sportsmanship for pers3nal invective. But the South
Carolina type of cheering actually wasn't much worse than
some to which the visiting teams have been subjected at the
Big Four schools."
It is up to the Big Four to set high standards in cheering
as they have in playing, the writer maintained. "The others
will follow."

Holtz has been coaching since
he graduated from Kent State
(Ohio) in 1959. Since that time
he has been on the football staffs
