Gamec< Open S By GAIL LOWRY Staff Writer As the Gamecock basketball sea son gets under way, another less publicized team is also beginning a season that promises to be a very good one. The freshman basketball team of USC will begin their season at home against Gordon Military College Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the Carolina Field House. The freshman starting line-up consists of four of the very most sought-after prep school players. Aside from their superb basket ball ability, they all made top grades in prep school. Thomas Owens and John Roche were members of the same high school team at LaSalle Academy in New York City. That team won the New York City Championship and placed second in their county last year. Owens, who is a 6-9 forward, averaged 20 points a game last year, was chosen most valuable player in the city and was on the first string all-city team. Roche, a 6-2 guard, averaged 18 points a game, was on the all city team, and was chosen best defensive player in New York City. Another starter, John Ribock is from St. Thomas Aquinas in Augusta, Ga. He was an All American high school player, he played in the Georgia all-star game two years-last year he was 1, Ga mecocA South Carolina halfhack, pass fromi Mike Fair behind Branton (84) to gain yardaj USC Garte Members of the USC sororities will take sides Thursdlay, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m. when a Garnet and a Black team battle for the chain pionship in the annual USC Garter B o w I, sponsored by Panhellenic Council. Coaches for the Garnet t e a m will be D on S om ma and Ben Garnto. Cooter Williams and Dan Hlarbison will coach the H 1 a c k team. Cheerleaders for the game will be chosen from among the faculty members. One representative from e a e h fraternity and one representative from Maxcy Brotherhood will vie for the title of Miss Garter Bowl. Pictures of the candidlates dressed as girls and appropriately namedl will appear in the ground floor of the R u s e I I House Mondlay through Thu rsday, a 1 o n g with boxes for dlepositing penny votes for the candidate of your choice. The candidate who receives the most penny votes will be crowned Miss G;arter Bowl (luring half-time fes tivities of the Garter Bowl.
