Fighting the void between fac
ulty and students is one reason
Dr. and Mrs. William Eccles have
become the first faculty couple
to live in a men's dorm at Caro
lina.
Dr. Eccles, a professor in Com
puter Sciences, and his wife Pa
tricia, the assistant dean of
women, have lived in Preston since
last June.
Although they are willing to act
as such, the Eccles are not resi

President T h o m a s F. Jones
left Saturday for a week-long
series of national meetings and
conferences.
He was in Washington, D. C.
Saturday (Nov. 11) for a meet
ing of the Advisory Committee of
the National Research Council for
Study of Post-Doctoral Education.
The following day, he attended a
Columbus, Ohio, conference of the
National Assn. of Universities and
Land Grant Colleges, and on
Tuesday, he returned to Washing
ton for the monthly meeting of
the National Science Board.
Dr. John R. Carpenter, asst.
prof. of geology, has been
elected president of the Caro
lina Geological Society and Co
lumbia will be the site of the
society's annual meeting next
year.

cian has resulted in a paper pre
sented (luring a conference this
week in Boston, Mass.

Samuel Litman of the Depart
ment of Electrical Engineering;
Dr. Dale Groome, cardiologist at

They have chaperoned Preston
parties; they have become some
one to talk to besides a fellow
student. Yet t h e y are not the
ones who must turn a student in

At the beginning of school they
s e n t out letters welcoming the
freshmen to Preston, and held a
reception for these students and
their parents.
Their latest project is "Yak
Snack", an open h o u s e every
