The U. S. Rehabilitation and So
cial Services Administration has
awarded USC a federal grant of
$14,677 for the first phase of an
experimental program.
The program will help acquaint
students earning arts and science
degrees w i t h employment oppor

The grant, under the direction
of Dr. Charles Dean, who is as
sisted by Assoc. Prof. Mary Cal

USC College of Arts and Science
through the Department of
Anthropology and Sociology.
A special "cognate" program has
been developed to draw the arts
and science courses closer to those
required to t r a i n rehabilitation
personnel.
U n d e r this program, students
may major in any subject in the
College of Arts and Science and
also take "cognate" c o u r s e s in
sociology and psychology to pre

Dr. Dean and Assoc. Prof. Cal
vert will travel to colleges through
out the state in order to interest
students in preparing for rehabili
tation and social service careers.
'Into The.
Students'
"The dedication, s u p p o r t and
cooperation of many persons have
thrust the Univcrsity of S o u t h
Carolina into the mainstream of
higher education in the U n i t e d

Jones in a new magazine, "Into
the Mainstream."
The generously illustrated bro
chure about the University is be
ing distributed to persons who are
particularly interested in USC's
growth and progress.
"But remember," continued
the president, "that the main
stream is so swift that only the
courageous, the visionary, the
creative and the strong can sur
vive the turbulence which is
progressing at maximum speed
toward national eminence."
The section of "Into the Main
stream" which is devoted to stu
dent comments emphasizes the im
portance to them of being "taught,
not programmed," I e a r n i n g to
think, and the importance of being
treated as adults.
The student section continued,
"No student at USC maintaining
satisfactory grades has to drop out
of school because of money. Today
any deserving student can pay forI
