Sophon Aids U1 By HEYWARD ADDY As4. Sports Editor R u I y lolloman, a pre-season second team h a I f b a c k who has worked his way into a starting position, has been a big aid to the Carolina backfield all season. Holloman, a graduate of Harts ville High School where he lettered in football two years under the direction of Coach Billy Seigler, is a sophomore at USC. The 5-9, 173-pound halfback also lettered for three years in track. In football, Holloman played full back in high school and received scholarship offers from a number of schools in the southeast. "I decided to come to Carolina because I had a number of friends here and it was also close to home,'' stated Holloman, "I could have gone to the University of Georgia, but that was too far away from home." 1)uring his freshman c a r e e r, lolloman was primarily an offen sive halfback. However, he did see some duty on defense. On offense, he rushied for 116 yards and caught six passes for ;:i yards and scored one touchdown. \V h e n spring practice started this year, Ioiltman says that he had no idea that he would he play ing first teant before the year was over. This was evident by the fact that h.- was playing behind Ben iarnto and lienny Galloway. After the loss of (Galloway for the entire seasotn, Hutch Rt vi'e's was moved to the starting spot. Ilotwever, after another injury. this onte to defensive back Wally )1r'e1, Reeves was moved to de fense and Ilollonian was elevated to the starting position. "I would have to attribute my success this season primarily to my improvement in blocking," com mented loll"man. "I) u r i n g the spring my blocking was horrible, but because the coaches stayed on me all the time I was able to im prove." As far as the success of the enti re team is concerned, 1olloman said, "There are two important factors in the tean's success this season. One is the off-st"ason pro gram whic"h i helped everyone g.et into shap. , and the other being that everybody is playing as a team and not individually.'' When asked about the loss to Wake Forest in their last outing, ilolloman said, "Any time a team loses there is bound to be a let dow\"n, but I'm sure we will he up fotr thli Alabama game. If the loss affects us in any'. way it will en cotur1age US to work hiarder to biet - t'er our recordt." I may favor running the ball a little more but I still would rather have a mixture," s I a t e d Holloman. When asked to describe his most memorable incident connected with the game of football, Holloman mentioned two occasions. "One in cident would have to be when I received the scholarship. I had no idea that I would even get an offer. The other incident occurred (luring my senior year in high school when our team went to the Gator Bowl to see Texas Tech and Geor gia Tech play. It was quite an ex perience to see some of the future pro stars such as Donnie Anderson play." Since Holloman is a sophomore, he will be one of the first football players at Carolina to play three years for Coach Dietzel. Holloman had this to say about his coach, "As a coach, Dietzel is great and has a great staff. Our record this year is a tribute to them. As a man, Coach Dietzel is also great. He is the kind of man who will help you in every way he can." Lveryone who has ever followed football or been connected with the game in any way is familiar with the statement "wait until next year," but Holloman feels that this is an appropriate statement for Carolina. "Naturally we will miss some of the seniors next year, but the ones of us who are not graduating will be better because of added experi 'nce," stated Holloman in connec tion with what he thinks of next year's team. "We will be as strong if not stronger in every phase of p the game next year. We expect a i lot of help from the freshman v team. This help not only means 1 playing but their a d d i t i o n will CORNELL ARM " GOOD FOOD " Convenient To Campus * Pleasant Atmosphere * 10% Discount On Meal I STUDENT SPECIAL Dot Worry... Also, if he were to get the chance, Holloman expressed a desire to play professional foot ball. "The computer takes and reor ranizes game actions and prints them out in various organizations mnd summaries," Dr. Eccles ex )lained. "And it's what you can iscertain from this that counts. "The form (which has been (copyrighted) records what each team did on different field sit uations," he continued. "From this information you can ana lyze whether a team can be ex pected to pass or run in a given situation, the game pattern, the frequencies of formation plus passing and running situations." "It was ascertained, for exam de, that on a first-down situation )uke passed 35 per cent of the ime," he said. "l)uke also lined ip 75 per cent of the time in hree offensive situations."
