A s t e a d y performer in the
Gamecock defense this season has
been defensive tackle 1)on Somma.
Somma, a graduate of Middlesex
High School, N. J., came to Caro
lina in 1961 where he starred as
a center and linebacker on the
freshman squad.
"I decided to come to USC be
cause I liked Coach Floyd and
Coach Bass," stated the defensive
tackle. "Also the school was real
nice."
1) u r i n g his first year on the
varsity squad, Somma lettered as
linebacker and offensive guard.
])uring his junior year Coach Diet
zel took over and Somma was
moved to the defensive line.
"I guess I would rather play
linebacker, because linebackers get
a shot at making more tackles,"
said So m iii a. "11 ow everi, the
coalies said that I was too slow
to play linebacker."
Regardless of his lack of speed,
Somma has done a job at tackle
wh1ich would be hard to surpass.

A defensive tackle's position is not
known for a high n u n b e r of
tackles, but Somma has amassed
around 55 individual tackles and
22 assists thus far this year. This
is compared to 18 tackles and 11
assists last year.
"I think the reason for my being
in on more tackles this year is
due to the off-season program
which helped me become quicker,"
stated Somma.
Carolina has finally become a
major threat in the ACC this year.
"I think the reason for our im
provement this year is due to the
fact that the players have become
more accustomed to Coach Diet
zel's way and his method. The
coaching as a whole has been really
tremendous and the spirit much
better,'' commented Somma.
Somma also had praise for Diet
zel and the entire squad. "If I
ever coach I would model myself
after Coach I)ietzel and his method
h e e a u s e with his method you
couldn't help but win, and you
couldn't he anything but a good
winner.
"The whole team deserves a lot

Somma attributes the success of
the defense this season to "gang
tackling and an everpresent com- t
petition to make the tackle be- I
tween the defensive members." i
Somma singled out a number of
first-year men as adding a great
deal to the success of the team V
this year. "Warren Muir, a trans. I
fer student, has definitely helped
us on offense, as well as Bob _
Mauro, guard, Bob Morris, guard
and Fred Zeigler, split end. On de
fense, Candler Boyd and Pat Wat
son have helped us tremendously
not only with their play but with
their great spirit."
