State emerg Cross-Country Squad Seeks First Victory Carolina's cross-country team under Coach Weems Baskin and his assistant Rob Brown, has par ticipated in four meets and is stil looking for its first victory. The team is composed of tw< distance runners (David Peddi< and Al Simms) and several mid cie distance runners. 4 "We are using these meets just as a workout for the next trac< season," Coach Baskin said. "It breaks the monotony of training every clay and gives the runners some competition." Over courses varying from 3.5 to 5.1 miles, the Gamecocks have lost to North Carolina 22-41; Fur man, 23-35; Duke, 19 44; and Clemson, 24-35. One of the highlights of th< season has been the running of Peddie, who has won three of four meets, Brown said. The Clemson Tigers were handed their third straight defeat in a game at Auburn, 43-21. Halftime score was Auburn 26 Clemson 21. The Tigers played the entire second half without Jimmy Addison, their star passer, who passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns before being injured. Nationally ninth-ranked N. C. State journe.yed to College Park, Md., and beat the winless Mary land Terrapins, 31-9. Duke's Blue Devils nipped the Virginia Cavaliers, 13-6, in an other Saturday game. Bob Riesenfield, Duke's soccer style kicker, missed the first ex tra point of his career in the game, although he made good on the second conversion attempt. In another out - of - conference clash, Wake Forest fell to Mem phis State, 42-10. The UNC Tarheels dropped their fifth contest of the year, losing 10-8 to Air Force. Tomorrow Clemson will journey to Duke, Maryland will travel to North Carolina, N. C.
