Rc Custom Spa available ir Former Bolsters By DON HULT Staff Writer Paul Dietzel in his inevitable drive to bring the Gamecock grid ders to greatness makes great de mands on his players. However, Gamecock fans little realize that Dietzel makes even greater demands on his staff and his coaches. During the season these men have no set working hours but generally are striving to improve the Gamecocks' grid iron performances from a f t e r breakfast till just before midnight snack. One coach, Sam Wyche, however, meets these stern require ments with minimal difficulty as he himself is a former ironman. After completing his college ca reer as a quarterback at Furman in 1966, Coach Wyche played for the Wheeling West Virginia Iron men of the Continental Football League and compiled a respectable record against such tough teams as the Orlando Panthers, the Phila lelphia B u l 1 d o g s, coached by former Navy coach Wayne Hardin, and the Montreal Beavers coached by former coach, Marvin Bass. The former Paladin is now working towards his MBA and as soon as his classes are over Wyche takes on his coaching duties. His function on the Dietzel staff is to coach and direct the offense scout squad, comprised of substi tute players who similate the of fensive formations of the Game cocks' upcoming opponents. Wyche plays quarterback on the squad and his role is one of the key reasons why the Gamecock deep pass defenders - Orrel, Watson, and McCord - have done such an outstanding job in filching enemy passes. Very few college quarterbacks have the passing arm and know how of a signal-caller who has played professionally; so after the pass defense has seen a week of Wyche's slingshot passes they are well prepared for the passing they will face on S a t u r d a y. Coach Wyche also has a key role at game time. After he finished his high school career in Atlanta Sam did not think he would ever again have the opportunity to notch any more touchdowns. He was a defensive specialist and did not play too much offense. College recruiters rarely will knock on the door of defensive stars; so Wyche enrolled at Furman on his accord and went out for football just for the joy of playing. He, soon impressed the coaches and won a scholarship after his freshman year. Amazingly enough, he was soon switched to offense to lead the team at quarterback. The Purple Palladins took their lumps against such top teams as West Virginia and East Carolina, but in his senior year Wyche led them to a respectable 5-5 record. NEW - FIND SCHOLARSHIPS BY COMPUTER Last year $30 million in college schol arships went unclaimed - because no qualified persons applied . . . because no qualified persons knew of them. " Now ECS engineers and educators have programmed a high-speed com puter with 700,000 items of scholastic aid, worth over $500 million, to permit students to easily and quickly locate scholarships for which they qualify. " The student fills out a detailed, con fidential questionnaire and returns it to ECS, with a one-time computer-proces sing fee of $15. In seconds the compu ter compares his qualifications against requirements of grants set up by foun dations, business, civic, fraternal, re ligious, and government organizations, and prints a personalized report to the student telling him where and when to apply for grants for which he qual ifies. Thousands of these do not depend on scholastic standing or financial need. r FREE ------ --- INFORMATION AND SAMPLE QUESTIONNAIRE NaOTH AMA41ICAN UOUCA-/ONAL ScOMsuTum SERvIeCES, INC.
