The USC Gamecocks are off to
a fine start this year and one of
the reasons is a healthy quarter
back named Mike Fair.
Fair, a graduate of Parker High
School in Greenville, is in his third
year as a starter. Besides being a
three-year letterman in football
u n d e r the direction of Whitie
Kendall, Fair also lettered three
years as a guard on the basketball
team and five years as shortstop
on the baseball team.
A f t e r graduation from high
school, Fair had a n u m b e r of
scholarship offers.
"I chose Carolina because I
liked the school and the coaches,
especially Coach Bass and Coach
Pitts," commented the Game
cock quarterback. "They were
real nice and made a good im
pression on my family. I was
also offered a real good deal on
football and baseball."
Like everyone else, Fair has also
noticed a difference in the 1967
edition of the Gamecock as con
pared to last year. "I think one of
the biggest differences has been
the attitude of the team and the
s t u d e n t body, Their spirit has
helped IS so much.
"I also think the off-season
program had a lot to do with
the change. Through a program
of weight lifting and running,
we learned to push ourselves
and become mentally tougher.
This attitude carries over into
the playing season.
"Besides the conditioning pro
graims, I think Coach Dietzel has
1 had a lot to do with the surge.
Personally he has made a big in
fluence of my thinking, and he
is a real great man. However, he
has managed to do this without
changing my individual perform
ance."

When asked about the aspect of
lay calling, Fair said, "The
oaches like for the quarterback to
all as many plays as he can, but
hey will' call plays when they
otice a weakness in the opposing
lefense."
When asked if he were surprised
at the success of the team, Fair
said, "I never thought that we
would be 3-1 at this stage, but
after we won a couple of games we
like the feeling. I am not, however,
surprised at some of the individual
performances."
Fair calls the Duke game and
the welcome event at the Rus
sell House the most memorable
occasion in his career. "The
