Price, ( Continu By HEYWARD ADDY Aimt. Sports Editor One of the busiest men employed by Carolina has to be Tom Price. Price, a 1951 graduate of USC, returned to his alma mater April 15, 1962 in the capacity of Sports Information Director. In school, he was a journalism major; and for eleven years after his grad uation, he worked for U n i t e d Press. "Our chief concern is to pub licize athletes and sports on an intercollegiate basis and furnish U Staff Price A information to the press. We also send out a lot of literature, some of which is voluntary and some is solicited. "Some of my other s p e c i f i c duties are to comply with TV sta tions on special projects on a player or coach, to provide pictures of the participants in all sports, and to send out film clips of the game highlights to TV stations. I also write and edit all sports bro chures, such as the 'Little Red Book,' and the football programs." During the football season, Price spends a good bit of his time on the road. He travels in advance of Sailing Club Approaching Fourth Year Jibe-ho . . . hard-a-lee . ready abo't . . . the weather's great, the sails are hoisted, and the University of South Carolina Sailing Club is ready for its fourth year. Its 65 members are busy re cruiting new members and getting the Lightning and the three Pen guins ready for fall sailing on the wvaters of Lake Murray. While some enjoy getting out on the lake and just sailing leis urely on weekday afternoons, others who are anxious to race are trying out for the sailing team. The USC Sailing Team was or ganized in 1963, the same year the club was formed. It promptly dle feated Duke, Old1 Dominion,. Col lege of Charleston and the The Citadel to become champions of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) the very first year. Since then Clemson and David son have been admitted to SAISA, and several regattas are held each semester at v a r i o u s member schools. The first one this year is sched uled for Saturday, Oct. 7. It will be the traditional rivalry between Carolina andl Clemson. The win niers receive a silver cup to keep until the next year when the two teams meet again. This year's Carolina-Clemson Regatta will be held at Lake Murray. Commodore of the USC Sailing Club is D)on Asay, an SAE from Little Silver, N. J. The head fac ulty advisor is Professor Robert Armstrong of the School of Busi ness Economics. Members of the Sailing Club may sail possibly as much as four or five afternoons a week. How ever, the sailing (lays have not been dlefinitely set yet, for they depend on the schedules of the fac ulty advisors. Transportation is always p r o v i d e d , and Bailing usually lasts from 2 p.m. until sun down. Besides participating in regattas sponsored by SAISA, the USC Sailing Club has in the past en tered a regatta sponsored by the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., and two War Me morial Regattas at the U. S. Other rea sons for h;s advance trips are to stimulate interest in the game and to sell tickets. "After taping an interview at the WNOK s t a t i o n Wednesday morning, I left and drove back to Duke where I spent the next three lays. During that time, I visited two more TV stations, three radio stations and six newspapers in the area.' I )uring the remainder of the t'ar, besides attending a number f b a n q u e t s and sportswriters l u n c h e o n s and making a few speeches, Price travels with the basketball team and covers all home spring sports games. "I stay tired from September thru March, but I enjoy it. I really love the school and I don't know that I would enjoy the job as much at some other school. Caro lina is the school that I want to be associated with. "I have the best job here so all the long hours and time away from home don't bother me. Even when your team is losing you can find one player to talk about. This would be the perfect job if we won every game, andl so far this year the team's success has made this my most pleasing season so far. "Here at Carolina we have a great staff to work with, not only the coaches but in every other of fice. These are some of the finest people in athletics and this could be one of the reasons the program s so successful.
