John Martin's "temporary job"

"The years have been many and

These might sound a little like
he parting words of a retired
Pony Express rider. Actually,
hey are the personal summation c
)f a significant record of 30 years
)f service by USC's "mailman t
with a college degree."
In 1937, Martin, as he is
known on campus, applied for
part-time janitorial work at
Carolina to help finance a se
mester of his depression-year
studies at Allen University.
That "one semester's work" has
now become one of the longest em
ployment tenures in recent Caro
lina history.
The depression, the war years,
the post-war educational boom, the
aftermath of Clemson - Carolina
hilarities when custodians had "a
hardl time unpainting that red

all these are part of his graphic
recollections about USC's most re
cent three decades.
The depression years were
hardship for most workers in
South Carolina, including cus
