Usc, C Duke and Vir Maryland Op By GAIL LOWRY Staff Writer The "big five" ACC teams were off and running-and passing again Saturday as the s e a s o n moved into its second week. A record-setting crowd of over j39,000 at Carolina Stadium saw the Gamecocks defeat the UNC Tar heels, 16-10. Defending conference champjons Clemson met Wake Forest at Death Valley in a bout which ended in triumph for Clemson, 23-6. Sophomore quarterback Charley Waters got his chance and really gave a show when the Tigers' ace quarterback Jimmy Addison went out with a knee injury. The Tigers struggled through the first quarter without even a first down. Waters completed six of eight passes and caught another which led to a 32-yard f i e I d goal by Steedly Candler for Clemson's first score. Jacky Jackson plunged in from the one-yard line to give Clemson a 10-0 halftime score. Buddy Gore s c o r e d Clemson's other two touchdowns on runs of four and seven yards. The Deacons' only score came early in the third quarter when .Jimmy Johnson broke loose for a run of 62 yards. The club was organized last sp)ring undler the direction of Dr. Brian O'Farrell of the history de partment. Dr. O'Farrell will con tinue to lead the club this year. "We are interested in pushing the Soccer Club as just a local campus club rather than a varsity sport," Dr. O'Farrell explained. "'This way the University faculty. and Carolina students can both compete together in the sport. "Anyone who would like to play eccer is welcome to come to the . ractices, which will be held every, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4-6 p).m. on Athletic Field F," he said. "But we needl 20 fellows with a 2.0 GPR or better in order for the club to be a certified school or-' ganization. "We are planning to have a scrimmage every Saturday from now until June and we are pres-, ently trying to line up a schedule whereby we can play other state universities and high schools," he continued. The loss left the Duke team with a 1-1 record for this season. The game was the opener for Michigan, who ran 6-4 last year. The Cadets of W est Po i n t marched past the Virginia Cava liers, 26-7. Army's touchdowns came from Carl Woessner from the six-yard line, Nick Kuriko from the 30 and 12, and Van Evans from the 24. State Wolfpack struck early in the game Saturday as Jim Donnan completed a 47-yard touch down pass to Harry Martell, in their home triumph over Buffalo, 24-6. Other scorers were Tony Bar chuk on a six-yard run, Bobby Hall on a 28-yard run, and Gerald Warren with a 25-yard field goal and three extra point kicks. Buffalo's only score was on an 18-yard pass from Dennis Mason to Chuck Drankoski. In the action tomorrow, Mary land will journey to Oklahoma for their season opener. USC will be at Duke, North Car olina will entertain Tulane, Vir ginia will play at Wake Forest Clemson will take on Georgia at home, and N. C. State will go tc Florida State. Sports Editor The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is organized in a manner that maintains a balance between athletics and academics. This is accomplished by giving policy-making power to Faculty Athletic Representatives appointed by the head of the member school. The ACC Constitution pro vides that the representative must be a full-time member of the faculty or staff of the insti tutions ". . . whose primary duty is not in athletics." USC's Faculty Athletic Repre -entative is )r. James A. Morris, vice-president of Advanced Stud ies and Research. The Faculty Athletic Represen tatives meet in council twice yearly to set conference policy. They discuss items on an agenda which is compiled two weeks prior to the meeting. On the day preceding the rep resentatives' gathering, the Ath letic Directors of the member schools meet to discuss the same items. Morr r Athletic In addition to his ACC role, Morris serves as Chairman of the USC Faculty Athletic Committee. This body is responsible for con trolling intercollegiate athletics at USC. Five members are elected by the faculty and the chairman is appointed by the President of the University. Working in the latter position, Morris journeyed to New York a year and a half ago with USC President Thomas F. Jones to meet with Coach Paul F. Iietzel. The academic side of Morris' job requires that he certify the eligibility of every athlete com peting for USC. This is done in accordance with school eligi bility standards and the 1.6 pre dicted grade point ratio (G.P.U.) required by the National Col legiate A t h I e t i c Association (NCAA). The 1.6 predicted G.P.R. is one of the most controversial rules ever passed by the NCAA. Predic tion is done on tables based on grades earned by students in rela tion to their high school class standing and College Board scores. Tables are established on three levels (national, institutional and conference) and the debate is een tered over which table is most ac curate. The ACC operates under the national table, but is in favor of allowing institutions to deter mine eligibility in accordance with their own school policy.
