Punishment was handed out to
six University students and a
prospective student was denied
permission to enter the University
at recent meetings of the Univer
sity Disciplinary Committee.
In one of two Cases involving
disturbances in the Russell House
a student was suspended a year
for assaulting another student.
The case was taken under advise
ment '\londay and the su-spension
reduced until September, 1967.
In the other case a student
was suspended one semester
held in abeyance for "conduct
unbecoming a Carolina student"

What University Theatre has
not accomplished this year in the
maturity of the play as an art
form was successfully corrected
last week with an amazing bizarre
and beautiful interpretation of
Georg Buchner's Woyzeck.
Director Conrad Bishop searched
the intermost depths of a man's
tormented soul and with ingenuity
and delicate creativity guided a
band of promising young actors
into a fascinating evening's enter
tainment.
lWoyaeck is a psychological
study of a common soldier bul
lied and bludgeoned by life.
Woyzeck, the soldier, is more
simple-minded than mad and
therefore is driven by hollow
morality and empty science to
destroy the one thing he really
loves. Throughout the play, one
sees Woyzeck bullied intellec
tually by the doctor, emotionally

the major-bullied to the point
of murder.
And John Carpenter in the title
role is definitely a real force in
that he portrays the world of
Woyzeck with a nightmare, ob
sessive quality comparable to a
young Anthony Quinn. Only in
brief speeches did he seem strained
in diction and delivery, but his
overall performance was excep
tional.
Emilie Condon as Marie,
Woyzeck's "wife," was excellent
and convincing, expressing a
wide range of emotions -lust,
love, bewilderment and torment
- with the facility of a polished
performer.
Burrell Sanders (the captain)
and James Vess (the doctor) were
adequate supporters, though Vess
tended at times to overplay in a
seemingly vain attempt to grasp
the spotlight from the powerful
characterization of Carpenter.
I was quite impressed with a
new face on the University stage
- that of Joseph O'Shaughnessy
as the major. In the infidelity
scenes with Miss Condon, he sup
plemented her changes in mood
with an honest and laconic meas
ure of composure and kadding tal
ent.
