FCA Meet

Former Alabama quarterback
Steve Sloan, who is currently with
the Atlanta Falcons, was the
guest speaker at last week's meet
ing of the Carolina chapter of the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
0 While Sloan did talk some about
his college (lays under Bear Bry
ant and about the Falcons' newly
acquired players, he spoke mostly
of his National Guard experiences
at Fort Jackson and his past ac
tivities with the FCA.
"People think that just because
I played football at Alabama that
I will zip through a 15-mile march
with no sweat. I am by no means
unpatriotic, but school and foot
ball beat the Army any (lay," said
Sloan.
Sloan recalled
when the FCA
chapter at
Alabama w a s
formed during
h i s sophomore
year. "At the
first meetings
we had o n I v
eight or ten
boys; the next
y e a r we had
SLOAN about 20 or 30.
Then we began a forum on sex
problems and attracted so many
new members we had to move to
an auditorium."
Sloan and teammate Paul Crane
(All-America center at Alabama
in 1965) participated in the FCA
Campus Crusade held (luring Eas
ter vacation at )aytona Beach.
All Carolina athletes are invited
to attend the next meeting of the
Carolina FCA Chapter Thursday
at 9:45 p.m. in the Towers Lounge.

Last Friday a caravan of Texans
stopped off at USC for a littlc
shooting . . . pictures that is.
The occasion was the photo
graphing session for Gamecock
footballers with Jim Laughead of
Dallas presiding.
Laughead is the owner of a
photography studio in Dallas where
pictures are taken of brides, babies
and the like. That is Laughead's
vocation.
Ilki avocation is taking picture%

demon-trating in the picture. With
his %on-in-law Jim Bradley a." a
partner, they take picture% for 44
college leams and 13 professional
football clubs.
The pictures are taken in the
spring for ". . . self-defense" says
Laughead. "If we waited until fall,
we couldn't finish in time," he said.
Bradley is in charge of the
"still" shots and Laughead handles
the action. Action it is, too, as
Laughead harks commands like a
drill sergeant to get the desired
responses. "Move It! Move It! ..
Lower. Son . . . Look to your right
a gorgeous dive . . . Hucking
and Bucking, Son!"
Laughead dresses for action too
with a slouch hat, overall. with
sutspender". red velvet vest, string
tie and ripple soled coaching shoes.
The operation is very precise and
professional. Chalk marks on the
ground serve as location cues and
Laughead demonstrates the action
he desires of the player. On the
average he shoots six pictures per
man. The stars sometimes have as
many as 25 taken.

arriving in Columbia the pair
went through 'lotida and Ken

headed ,to Georgia and back to
Clemson.
"That's hopping and junping,"
aid I:cughead, "but it can't be
helped. We try to get them tA)

cause it is our life." They estimate
that they will arrive in Dallas
around the end of May after hit

Laughead and Bradley have had
some unusual experiences in their

all night rain storm and launched
a dozen cartons of cigarettes in a
foot of water.
A plane chartered to takc them
to the Haltimore Colt training
camp overshot the runway when
the brakes failed on landing. The
pilot narrowly avoided a tombstone
in an adjacent cemetery.
