The squad looik ed diffe rent from

there were only 71 candlidates

Oine of the hasic pu rposes of

playe'rs a thorough groundlwork of
the fundamentals.
The defensive team undlertook
some live drills with some hone

The NCA A recently adloptedl a
new rule which states that on punt
formation the interior linemen
cannot break downfieldl to cover
the punt until the hall is actually

compensating for this by add(ing
some new wrinkles to the Giame

The South Carolina State Ten
nis Tournament gets underway
here this afternoon at the Maxcy
Gregg Courts in a two-day affair
which should provide the most in
teresting competition for the state
title in years.
This year there are no netters
from one school expected to domi
nate the event as in past years.
Instead, there are three teams
which are in the running, with
USC and Clemson expected to bat
tle for the No. 1 honor.
Presbyterian College, because of
its past record as perennial tennis
king, should be considered the
darkhorse of the competition, but
still should not be considered too
lightly.
In the singles competition the
battle should narrow down to
U S( "s obby Heald and Clemson's
Zulfi Rahim.
Heald upset the defending ACC
champion here in Columbia on
March 30, but the Gamecocks were
beaten in the final doubles match
to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory.
Heald himself has been beaten
only- once this season, a 3-6, 6-4,
K-6 decision by Maryland's John
Scheaffer in College Park.
in the doubles competition the
5h-mson netters should be con
side"rel the slight favorite by vir
tue of their two loubles victories
ove r the Gamecocks which decided
that match.
Presbyterian would have to be
co nSi<lred the No. :3 team in the
tournament despite the fact that
the Gamecocks defeated them 8-1
in their match. That victory was
the first that anyone can remem
her the Gamecocks taking over
the always strong Blue Hlose.
Against other state teams the
Gamecocks have easily defeated
Furman, 9-0; The Citadel, 9-0;
Wofford, 6-0, in a rain-shortened
contest, and rilpped previously un
defeated 1:rskine, 9-0.
A further indication of the
(Gamecock netters' strength is the
manner in which they pressed an
undefeated North Carolina team
last Saturday before losing the
match, 6-3.
lHobby llc'ald won the only sin
2les victory for the G;amecocks in
hat match with a 6-1, 6-3 verdict
,ver G;ene Hamilton. Hie also

Coach Jackie Powers' Game
cocks begin their Tobacco Road
trip as they meet UNC today at
Chapel Hill and N. C. State to
morrow at Raleigh.
Carolina ends its five-game
ACC road trip with the N. C.
State game and returns home to
Rex Enright Field Monday to play
host to The Citadel at 2:30.
The Gamecocks started the
trip with a victory over the
Duke Blue Devils as Billy Reit
meier went the distance for a
6-2 win. Danny Scarpa, All-ACC
catcher, continued the fine hit
ting he has shown since return
ing to the lineup after a three
week layoff. Scarpa was in
jured in the final game against
Shippensburg State. He col
lected two hits in three times at
the I;late, after going three for
three against Clemson three
days earlier.
Saturrday, Scarpa had three
more hits as the Gamecocks
crushel Wake Forest, 7-4. lobby
Ilryant started that game, and
left after three innings, with the
score at 5-0 for Carolina. Ron
nie Evans went the final six
frames to pick up his fourth win
without a loss. Ilut it was out
fielder Larry Womack who stole
the offensive show with four hits
against the 1)eacons as he raised
his hatting average to .400.
The Gamecocks absorbed their
first conference loss Tuesday at
Clemson, 8-1. Clemson scored six
runs in the sixth inning, three on
a homer by Rusty Adkins. The
loss snapped a twelve-game win
ning streak for the Gamecocks
and was their first defeat in six d
conference games.
South Carolina's only run
came in the second as Bob
Mauro singled with two out and
Scarpa tripled him home. The
loss was the first of the season
for starter Bobby Bryant. Clem
son was leading 2-0 in the sixth,
when, with two out, Bryant
walked two, one intentionally,
then allowed two singles and
then Adkin's homer.
South Carolina still leads the
ACC with a 5-1 conference mark.
Overall the Gamecocks are 15-3.
Hefore the Clemson game, the
team was batting .284 as comn
pare-d to opponents' .189. The -
pitching staff's ERA was 1.67.
Carolina w~on one-run games over
UNC and N. C. State at their last
meetings.
Billy Heitmeier is the prob
able starter today as the Gamae
cocks try to start another win
ning streak. Rleitmeier has an
ERA of 1.26, has won three and
lost none. In 419% innings he
has allowe-d but 30 hits and
struck out 412. His first two wins
were a no-hitter and a one
