SAN FlRA NCISCc - "I'm on
the horns of a dilemlla,'' said
ASl'S1 president .Ton M.\Iena
min.
lie was talking about the pro
posal that the University of San
Francisco Senate consider a
statement on student academic
freedom at its next, and this
year's last, meeting.
The president sai(a that he
coul(n't decide whether to sub
mit a detailed proposal or a gen
eral statement to the Senate.
"There are prohlemlls either'
way,'' he said. "If the freedom
of students is spelled out in de
tail, new situations might arise
that aren't covere(I."
McMenamin said that a de
tailed freedom statement drawn
up a few years ago wouldn't
have covered the threatened ex
pulsion of conscientious objectors
this year.
"A general statelment, on the
other hand, woUld express princi
ples that would cover new situa
tions," he said.
Mcletenamin said that the

HI-Rll':I IE-Y -The banana peel has be
conie "the very next phase" on the campus
drtg scene as predicted by I)onovan in his
song "'Mellow Yellow." Because of its cheap,
legal "high" banana smoking may soon rival
the popularity of marijuana.
At Berkeley, if you want a banana vou
have to be at the store when they open.
A recent issue of the Berkeley Barb, in
formed its readers of a kitchen-tested recipe
for preparing bananas for smoking. "Peel
a ripe banana, scrape from the inside of the
peel the white fiber and dry in a slow (200
degrees or less) oven -then crumble and
roll into a banana joint, or better, smoke in
a pipe."

Iananas are reported to produce a wide
range of effects. It has been likened to al
most every known "'high,'' from marijuana
to psilocybin. Some users experience an in
tensification or distortion of the senses.
Others report ill effects.
Bananas contain saratonin, a chemical
which effects the nervous system. A Detroit
pharmachologist states that smoking the
l>eels couldn't bring about sufficient brain
blood transport for a "high." He estimates
that it could take as long as ten years of
experimentation to track down the chemical
actually responsible for the effects.
