Enrollment Nearly 14,( USC's t o t a 1 enrollment in all classes for all campuses will reach nearly 14,000 for the 1967 fall se mester. A 28.5 per cent increase in grad uate students is the largest gain. The fall semester graduate student group will tot,al 1,835, while the 1966 fall enrollment was 1,428. M. I). Ballot boxes will be placed in each dorm with polls open 11 a.m. to r; p.m. ( Graham I1ill, an accounting ma jor from Sumter, is unopposed for the presidency. Candidates for the office of vice presidcnt are Ken Love, an ac counting major from Clover, and William Bynum, an English major from Chester. Student Union To Offer Free Events Eight nights of free entertain ment will he planned for the fall and spring semesters of next year. Earle Blackmon, prc-ident of the S t u d e n t Union, and Andy Smith, chairman of the Dance and Concert C o m m i t t e e, have an nounced that the free dances and concerts will be offered in ac cordance with the promise made to students during the activity fee increase referendum. The free events will be the fall and spring mixers, llomecoming weekend (two events), Christmas weekend (two events), and Spring weekend (two events). There will also be a slight in crease in the number of undergrad uate students transferring to the main USC campus. As of March 15 the total number of pending freshmen for the fall is 3,537 and accepted freshmen, 1,152. The pending transfers total 586 and accepted transfer students 45. Final spring semester grades will determine the acceptance of those persons listed as pending. Rejected freshmen totaled 462 and rejected transfers, 45. Compared to March 1966 the number of students on the pending list has increased 20.8 per cent; the number on the accepted list has in creased 6.4 per cent and the num ber on the rejected list has de creased -5.8 per cent. President Addresses Fraternity University President Dr. Thomas F. Jones declared USC will have a computer sciences d e p a r t m e n t within the next few semesters, at a banquet last Thursday honoring the new initiates of Phi Eta Sigma honorary scholastic fraternity. In his remarks during and fol lowingi a presentation of slides he and Mrs. Jones made on a recent trip to the Far East, Dr. Jones also maintained that the present Caro lina computor can do in 40 minutes the work of a 40-hour-a-week clerk for 40 years. lie said that computor training is now required for the university graduate that do,-s not want to be come obsolete in his field within a short time after graduation. lie reported that this training is now spreading into junior high and elementary schools. Reasons for the turn-out of the crowd varied greatly from those who came for the spirit excited by a horse race to those who strictly came for the "spirits." Many who were present look upon the Cup as a great social event in which one may renew old acquaintances or form new friendships. The Cup, as always, exemplified a gigantic fashion show in the sun. This year for the first time the controversial mini-skirt made its appearance and the scene was en joyed by a number of the males. A variety of hats as usual dominated the fashion scene. A Carolina boy summed up his v i e w s, "It was ridiculous. The nolice made it a big game by shoot ing water." He then added, "The police (log performed well." Ocean Drive Police were reported to have arrested 200 people during the fracas which centered around an area teeming with 10,000 to 15,. 000 people. A Carolina student journalist who happened to be on the scene sounded a different note, claiming that "A lot of students there didn't realize how close to being real bad it was. Most of them went down to have a bunch of fun, but a few. .. A USC coed claimed that she was locked in a motel room with two other girls and 11 boys "after the police declared martial law."
