Sports Editor Frank McGuire's C a r ol i n Gamecocks overcame one of thei worst offensive games of the sea son last Saturday in Raleigh whe they defeated North C a r o I i n State, 59-54, to clinch third seedin in the Atlantic Coast Conferenc Tournament. The victory left the Gamecock with an 8-4 record in the ACC their first winning season in cor ference competition. It also gav them their finest overall record i 20 years with 15 victories agains six defeats, pending the results o this w e e k 's ACC Tournament which began yesterday in Greens boro. Going the first eight minutes with one basket, the Gamecocks finally came alive and with 10:26 left in the half gained the lead for good at 12-11. From there they managed to increase their lead to seve n points before Kretzerj pumped in one to cut the Game cocks' half-time lead to 25-20. The Gamecocks opened upi quickly in the second half but lost their momentum and a tap-in by Moore with 7:44 remaining cut their lead to 43-42. His stay at UNC lasted about one week, because Frank McGuire soon offered him the assistantship at USC. That man is Jack Powers, who assumed the post of varsity base ball coach here on March 1. Before joining the USC staff, Powers was varsity baseball coach and football backfield coach for the Furman Paladins. STATUS ROSE Under his tutelage the Paladins' baseball s t a t u s rose from "also ran" to the first division of the Southern Conference, and included was a league title in 1965. His duties with USC will also include a position as assistant to Dick Weldon in the field of high school relations. After two years as a student at Mars Hill Junior College in Mars Hill, N. C., Powers moved on to Furman where he received his BA vn Career rz Game i Guire heg:n at his christening 2.1 years ago, when McGuire gave him a basketball for a gift. Walsh cited McGuire as "one of the main rea sons for my becoming a coach." When Walsh f i n i s h e d high school, he was offered and accepted a basketball schclarship at UNC to play under McGuire. During his playing days at UNC, Walsh was a three-year letterman and in his senior year he set a Tar Heel field goal accuracy record of .559, which still stands, and averaged 13..1 points per game as a backcourt regular. In 1962 Walsh received the Foy Roberson, Jr., award which goes annually to the N o r t h Carolina basketball player who makes the Ichief contribution to team morale and sportsmanship. While attending law s c h o o 1, W a l s h helped coach the UCC freshman teams for three years. This was his first step to a coach ing career. "As assistant coach, I do any thing that Coach McGuire asks me to do," said Walsh. "One of rmy chief dutiies is to do most of the scouting and some recruiting." At the time of Walsh's ap)point ment, McGuire said, "I don't know of anyone who can (do a better job of recruiting, scouting and other essential duties of an assistant coach. When a s k e d about the possibilities of recruit ing a big man, Walsh replied, "We are looking at a number of boys and we are going to get as many as possible. "But we are not going to be able to replace Mike, because there are no high school players as good as he was." "I have no definite plans for the immediate future, but every young coach has his eyes set on a head coaching job," observed W a l sh, "but I am very well satisfied with my present position." As a Marine, Powers became a pilot rated in both helicopters and light observation aircraft. During his four years in the s e r v i c e Powers was not separated f r o m athletics and he was able to play service ball as a quarterback at Pensacola, Fla. and on Okinawa. When released from the Ma rines he returned to his Alma Mater in 1962 as a graduate stu dent and assistant coach. In 1963 Powers took charge of the base ball team and made them con tenders in the Southern Conference. In recognition of his work at Furman, Powers was awarded the NCAA District Ill Coach of the Year honor when his Paladiris took the Southern Conference pennant in 1965. Along with his baseball succ Powers also had time to earn a Master's Degree in Educa tion while on the C reen v ille campus. MULLINS NATIVE Powers, a Mullins, S. C., native. is married and the father of twin sons. Mrs. Powers is the former Gayle Sharp of Louisville, Ky., and the two younger members of the family are Barry and Buz, age six. The baseball team has only had a few days of practice under Jack Powers, but he is able to say that he team ". .. has a tremendous at titude and if anything goes wrong :t won't be because they weren't hustling."
