Sports Editor USC's swimming team, coached by Jack Thompson, began and ended their holiday vacation on a happy note. The Saturday preceding Christ mas vacation the Carolina water birds put down the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute, 62-41, and last Saturday in Atlanta they whipped Georgia Tech, 59-39. At VMI the (amecocks scored eight first places, set three pool records, established another and tied one. At Georgia Tech they took nine first places to Tech's three to push their record to 3-1, having lost only their opening meet to North Carolina. Double Winner Bill "Breezy" Muller was the only double winner in the two meets, taking the 20)0-yard indli vidual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. aluller's times of 2:09 in the individual medley and 2:2.1.3 in the breaststroke were hoth pool records for the Keydet pool in Lexington. Va. He also swam the second lap of the 100 yard medley relay, keeping the race tight until teammates Mike Slenker and )iek Mlachata could put the team ahead with a winning time of 4:03. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Alex Alexander had gained a one-lap lead by the thirtieth lap of the .10 lap event, winning easily, and put ting a pool record of 11:25.3 in the record books for the first time. In the 50-yard freestyle, Mike Slenker gained a win for ('SC with a time of :22.5, tying the pool rec ord. Iool Record Thle third pool record at VMll was set in the diving competition by USC's Vie Laughlin with a total of 277.55 points. Laughlin's (living teammatte, ('hic Langnehs, suffered a shoulder injury on his third dive and withdrew from competition. lie had completed two beautiful dives up to that point and would most iikely have placed second and possibly have pushed Laughlin for first. ('arolina's other two wins were p1ovich-d by John Pittington in the 200-yard butterfly and Paul Knapp in the 200-yard freestyle.
