After a long plague of irrepres sibly bad movies in Columbia, it was a welcome change to witness one of the finest examples of good modern theatre last week in "The Blue Max." The n o v e l adaptation by Ben Rarzman and Basilio Franchino was directed with a rare combina tion of imagination and genius by John Guillermin, hitherto all but unknown to American audiences. The erection of the infirmary was a result of a gift of $15,000 from Miss Ann 11. Jeter. Miss Jeter pre sented the funds in honor of her nephew, W a 1 a c e Thompson, an alumnus. With eagerness the trus tees accepted the donation and began thinking of constructing the build ing on what was formerly known as Gibbes Green. Unfortunately their plans were thwarted, for a delegation of Columbia citizens contested the University's right to build on the property. Therefore, a new site, the southwest corner of Bull and Green streets, was decided upon. Wallace Thompson Infirmary has come a long way since then. It can now boast of two doctors, seven nurses, a technician, a sec retary, and a housekeeper. An X ray machine has also been offered; the technician will o p e r a t e the new device as well as do blood tests. 1)r. Although the athletic department does have a makeshift ambulance, few occasions arise for its use. Often the campus police bring in students who have fallen on campus or gotten sick in the dormitory late at night. When a student is too ill to remain in the infirmary, he's carried to one of the hospitals, and the University doctors care for him there. If a special prescription is given to a student, there is a charge, but cold capsules, c o u g h syrup, and most other medicines are free. The infirmary receives $6.50 per student per semester from the activity fee. Ili, a p p l i e . to those w ith nine hours or more. 'The infirmarv's only other means of support is real estate. Many people complain about in firmary conditions, and the doc tors are aware of this. In refer ence to this Dr. McNulty said, "I do believe a new building with more private rooms would improve the students' attitude toward the infirmary. It would also help if they could realize that we are not here for major illnesses.
