In the pre-season session, quar terback "Nelson Stokely" of LSU executed his options to perfection. Georgia's All - America defensive tackle "George Patton" fended off blocks with reckless abandon, and Tennessee's great linebacking duc "Paul Naumof" and "Doug Archi bald" continually torpedoed enemy thrusts to the goal line. Presently Clemson's nifty quar terback "Jimmy 'Needle' Addison' and swift tailback "Buddy Gore' run hither and yon across the Rex Enright Center's practice fields. All of these big names of college football are under the tutelage of "Bear Bryant," "Vince Dooley, and "Frank Howard." Football addicts who start mut tering to themselves for having missed the opportunity of viewing this glittering array of All-Ameri cans should rest easy, h o w e v e r, since the author is trying to stretch your imagination. Nevertheless, to Coach Paul Diet zel and his staff, these players and the rest of their teams have been playing at the Roundhouse "in essence" because Carolina Coach Lou Holtz and his scout squad have (done such an effective job in as similating the plays and players of the Gamecock varsity's upcoming weekly opponents, even to the point of wearing orange Tennessee jer THE SLIGI ITLY FASHION Ban! Under the direction of Coach Holtz, it is the responsibility of the scout squad, more affectionately known as the "Bollunks," to be come familiar with the plays of each of Garolina's upcoming op i ponents so they can give the start ing team a thorough sneak preview of what plays the Gamecocks will tace each Saturday. One would have to expand his imagination a bit to draw analogy between the scout squad and the aforementioned gridiron celebrities but not so when describing their astute, dynamic, young coach Lou Holtz, who has what it takes to someday become a Bryant, Dooley, or Howard in his own right. The well-liked mentor considers the boys on the scout squad to be "a great bunch," and he is particu larly gratified in the Hunk's pride and espirt-de-corps. Coach Holtz emphasized that the boys were not being red-shirted be cause they were less adept than the players currently on the Varsity roster, but red-shirting now gives them a year of active competition when they'll be more mature. Right now they're diamonds-in the-rough who have the potential of glittering themselves with the maturity, experience, and coaching they'll receive under Holtz's tute lage. Offensively, the 'Hunks are led y quarterback P.Lt Case, a 6-2, 195 - pound "slingshot - arm'" who transferred to Carolina from the University of Cincinnati and must "sit out" a calendar year before playing on the varsity. The theme of the program was "What's Your Position," and its p u r p o s e was to familiarize the athletes and coaches of South Car olina high schools with the FCA. The purpose of the FCA is to confront athletes and coaches, and through them the youth of our na tion with the challenge and ad venture of following Christ in the fellowship of the Church. The meeting opened w i t h the singing of "Onward Christian Soldiers," after which Tom Win gard gave the welcome. Mike Fair read the devotions and Gene Lind sey, president of the USC Chapter, i nt r o d u c e d the guests and the speaker. In his speech, Richardson related to the group of over 500 some of his experiences as a second base man with the New York Yankces and how he was able to keep Christ first in his life. He explained how the Yankee ball club would hold church services on the Sundays when they were away from home. "We would hold a simple service within the ball club and invite a guest speaker. About 15 players would usually show up at the serv ices. The biggest thrill of my life came at one of these services, when the man who will take my place next year at second base accepted Christ as his Savior."
