Rare -indeed is the individual who
has sufficient ability to excel both s
on the athletic field and in the J
classroom.
The 1966 edition of the Biddie
football team hails one of its own
as a guy who has the potential to
reach the same heights, end Andy
Chavous of Hephzibah, Georgia.
Off the gridiron, Chavous has set
high standards for himself. A phar
macy major, he has f o u n d the
rigorous demands of pharmacy and
football cramping his schedule.
After an afternoon of throwing
t
blocks and snaring passes, he sits
down to an evening of biology, chem
istrv, math, English and pharmacy,
a heavy load even for a pure acade
mician.
For Chavous adjusting to col
lege life was quite a problem,
especially since he had just mar
ried his high school sweetheart
when he entered USC this fall.
Now, ('havous and his new bride,
Jeannie. have finally become ac
climated to USC.
Aside from academic and do
mestic responsibilities, Chavous is
a great humanitarian. This past
summer he worked at a hospital
for retarded children as a recrea
tion counselor and can not wait to
work there again next summer.
On the gridiron the fleet-footed
flanker is motivated by the same
desire to excel.
At Butler H i g h S c h o o I near
Augusta, Ga. he played split-end and
defei-.c halfback and acquired such

Chavous received a number
cholarship offers from such c<
eges as Mississippi State, Georgi
v. C. State and USC. He chose
ome to Carolina in order to pu
ue a career in pharmacy as wi
s play football.
Although somewhat disappoint

He led the Biddies in pass r

Jimmy Poole is USC's "number wa

g also.
The 5' 8" Due West native car
es the title of "kicking specialist"
i the Gamecock football roster.
His position as the Gamecock's
AT and field goal kicker was
:tually won last season when he
as a spohomore fresh up from the
inks of the JV's.
As a sophomore, Jimmy kicked
I PAT's out of 16 attempts, in
uding two big ones that enabled
eo Gamecocks to defeat Clemson.
e led the team last season in
oring with 32 points that came
7 the way of 14 PAT's and six

offense and defense got together to
come up with USC's only victory
thus far.
Against the Wolfprack, Jimmy
went four for four in the PAT
category and then kicked a 31-yard
field goal just to help dedicate the
new stadium at Carter Field.
The kicking game is nothing new
to the 156-pound junior, as he has
been at it for five years now.
The importance of Jimmy Poole's
talent is growing. With two tough
games remaining on the '66 sched
ule, Jimmy and his educated toe
could be the difference between
victory and defeat.
With a good defensive s h o w
against Alabama and Clemson, a
boot from him might end the sea
son with two great wins and put
some icing on a football cake that
so far has been anything but
sweet.
