Dr. Rees is no stranger to verse
versions of the classics, having
translated both the "Iliad" and the
"Odyssey."
Also the author of a book of
poems and of several books of
verse especially for children, Dr.
Rees has written "Riddles, Riddles
Everywhere," and "The Song of
Paul Bunyan and Tony Beaver."
Of his most recent work Dr.
Rees says, "I have tried to re
create selected fables in verse for
our time, and to do it in as lively
a way as I could consistent with
simplicity."
According to Dr. Rees, each age
makes its own version of that
body of anonymous lore that the
ancients ascribed to "Aesop" of
whom little is known beyond leg
end. Traditionally, he was a slave
who lived in about the middle of
the sixth century before Christ.
In many instances, fables as
cribed to Aesop are kindred to
fables of India and China, as well
as to certain of the Brer Rabbit
tales.
The oldest written collection of
fables from Aesop is the Latin
verse version of Phaedrus, a freed
man of the first century of the
Christian era.
