Their Jol
By KAY RANKIN

The word "housemother" has
many connotations for the Caro
lina coed. To some she is a mother
away from home, to others she is
a Personal advisor, but to all she
is a friend who is ever present
when needed.
After talking to three of our
housemothers, it soon became evi
dent that they all had several
things in common. Each expressed
a deep interest and love for all
young people. Too, all three felt
that the work was rewarding and
above all extremely interesting.
Mrs. Dorothy Hammond, hostess
of South Tower, got this point
across when she said, "There is
never a dull moment. I have been
here going on four years and have
never had two days alike."
This year it is her goal to know
the girls better since last year she
was especially occupied with iron
ing out the difficulties of moving
into a new dormitory.
Mrs. Louise Jones, one of the
housemothers at South, said that
at the end of a hectic day there
was nothing like a student's ap
preciation to make her realize
again that her job was worthwhile.
Last year one of the girls in her
dorm expressed her thanks by
handing Mrs. Jones a gift for no
apparent reason. The note was

quite explanatory, however; writ
ten on it were these words, "Thank ]
you for being my mother away
from home."
She had another experience in
the past year that made her feel
pleased with her work. One of the
coeds came dashing into her room
late one night complaining about
the noise on the hall. Instantly
Mrs. Jones bounded out of bed
without her glasses (which are es
sential for her vision) and her
hair in curlers. When she reached
the door a chorus of "Happy
Birthday" greeted her. These are
two of her fondest memories and
recalling them always gives her
a special lift.
Baby-Sitters, Inc.
Mrs. Jones has what her as
sociates laughingly call a baby
sitting service. She keeps a list
of students' names who baby-sit
for the young married couples on
campus and the professors. This
has definitely earned her a place
in the hearts of many young
mothers.
Mrs. Sarah Felton is a new
member of the Carolina Commun
ity, but she has had previous ex
perience as a housemother. She
was in charge of 87 boys at a
small Methodist college in North
Carolina. Mrs. Felton is now an
assistant hostess at McClintock.

*r. As a housemother in a boys'
Jormitory, I often felt I was
here simply to unlock the doors
when they forgot their keys and
to keep the entire building from
being carried off!"
She was especially impressed
with the freshman girls in her
Jorm whom she described as "the
nicest group of girls I have ever
met." The first night Mrs. Felton
was here there was a timid knock
at her door, and a student from
Connecticut came in. There was a
big tear rolling down her cheek,
mnd Mrs. Felton soon discovered
the girl had no roommate and felt
very lonely. Instantly, arrange
ments were made by the new
housemother to get a roommate
ror the freshman. Thanks to Mrs.
Felton the girl is now delighted
with college life.
These three housemothers felt
hat certain qualities were neces

these requirements were love.
anderstanding and patience. Mrs.
Hammond summed her job up
well when she said, "I never feel
