A pre-season poll by one of the
wire services failed to list LSU
among the top ten gridiron teams,
but as far as USC head coach Paul
Dietzel is concerned, the Tigers
are going to be "one of the finest
teams in the country.
"They have depth and experi
ence," Dietzel noted, "and they
are going to he a tough team."

Stan Juk, a two-year letterman
from Georgetown, has been se
lected by Coach Paul Dietzel and
his staff to serve as game captain
when Carolina meets LSU in the
season opener at Baton Rouge
Saturday night.
Instead of tri-captains, as has
been the custom for past Game

cock teams, Dietzel plans to se
lect a different senior as captain
for each of the team's ten games.
"We feel this will help develop
lea(lership and a sense of responsi
bility in each of the boys," Dietzel
said.
Juk, a 6-2, 210-pounder, will
start for the Gamecocks at the de
fensive rover position.
"Stan is one of the best all
round( players we have," said

McClendon has a letterman for
every offensive and defensive
position except one, plus a number
of standout sophomores.
The big question mark for the
Tigers is junior quarterback Nel
son Stokley.
As a sophomore last season
Stokley started out like a ball of
fire but was sidelined by a knee
injury in the sixth game of the
season.
The knee was operated on dur

One of the game captains will
be selected at the end of the sea

"By picking him at the end of
the season instead of at the begin
ning," noted Dietzel, "we are as

tain."
Each game captain will be dis
tinguished from his teammates by
his black helmet.

be seen if he will return to the
form of a year ago.
"lie probably will be ready,"
observed Dietzel, "and that boy is
really a good football player. Last
season he gained more yardage in
five or six games than most quar
terbacks do in an entire season."
Billy Masters, a big (6-5, 225)
powerful runner will give the
Tiger offense a good ground game
to complement Stokley's passing.
LSU has exceptional backfield
speed with three men-Tailback
Jim Doi,ny (9.R), Fullback Mau
rice LeBlanc (9.8) and Wingback
Sammy Grezaffi (9.5)-clocked at
under ten seconds in the 100-yard
dash.
The Tiger defense, with 14 let
termen returning, appears to be
as tough as usual.
Heading the defense arc ends
Mike Robichaux and John Gar
lington and tackle Tommy Fus
sell---all three of whom are likely
candidates for All-SEC honors.
Overall, this year's version of
the LSU Tigers is not quite as
large as most of McClendon's
teams, but what is lacked in size
is made up for in speed.
Compounding things for Dietzel
and his Gamecocks is the fact they
must play the Tigers in Baton
Rouge. where LSU teams in the
past have been extremely tough.

hope to have him back in about a
