Lockel JOHN L I read Ernie Trubiano's column before I started to write this one, and I am 169% in agreement with him. We here at USC have known defeat all too well. This probably accounts for the incredible stu dent apathy I have witnessed over the past four years. Things are changing rapidly-for the better. Frank McGuire has no peers as a basketball coach. And Paul Dietzel stands right alongside Bear Bryant and Ara Parseghian as one of the best college football mentors in the land. The thing that needs to be em phasized around here is, as Ernie mentions in his colunm, winning. I have often heard it said that "winning may not be everything, but it sure beats hell out of what ever's second." I heartily concur. This is not to suggest that we should resort to any extralegal means to insure victory. I do be lieve that our athletes, every one of them, should leave their hearts out there on the playing field or the basketball court. The world can be pretty cold and cruel. It has no use for a loser. Constant defeat never helped anybody's character. Something else that I believe in and expect the men and women of Carolina to start showing is some school spirit. They should back our athletic teams to the hilt. A good occasion for a tremendous show of support will be this coming Thurs. day afternoon at the Rex Enright Athletic Center baseball field. Their fans have given our base ball, basketball, and track teams some brutal treatment year after year and they get nothing when they come down here. I hope this year when they take the long ride back to that hell hole in the Piedmont they'll have been given something to think about. Finally, before I rack up on all those exams and graduate, I'd like to say a few words about two of the finest young coaches in the nation. Tennis Coach Bill McClain and Swimming Coach Jack Thompson have been a constant help to the sports staff of The Ganceock supplying all kinds of informa tion at all kinds of weird hours, and always finding the time to talk to us. They have turned in nothing short of remarkable jobs in the brief time they have been here, as the records of this sea son's tennis and swimming squads bear out. And we will be going even farther in those two sports. Well, that's it. I got carried away - my long-windedness took over. Writing for The Gamecock has been a challenge, especially for a political science major, but it's been enljoyable. These four years at USC have been the best of my life and I wish everyone that returns next year the best o fluck and remember Back the Gamecocks!
