DONALD C
The first impression that one
gets of this man is that surely he
must be an insurance executive,
or perhaps a bank vice-president,
or maybe an English professor
anything but a football coach.
Paul Dietzel, Carolina's new head
coach and athletic director, is in
deed a football coach, and one of
the best at that. But he is more
than just a
coach, he is a
person who is

Promise(l 110 overnight success.
"It will take a few years." he said,
"but we will get there."
Lo. ing is something which he
has io use for. "I'll take a dull
victory over a spectacular defeat
anytilme." he asserted. "I expect
my players to pay the price; giv
ing 50 per cent may make you
look good losing, but it takes a
100 per cent effort to be a win
ner."
Dietzel astredl everyone that lie
was not only the football teamix's
coach but the students' and facult%'
coach as well. "There are otnly two
groups which I try to please-the
students and faculty and thie par
ents of tihe boys 1I'm coaching."
Concerning the Gamecocks' open
ing game next season with LSU
in Baton Rouge, he qurpped, "The
team thinks it's going down there
for a game, but it's really an up
rising." The LSI' fans are noted
for their enthusiasm and for fill

play at homre.

also an enthusiastic supporter of
selling season tickets, and he noted
that in a few years Carolina Stad

of the University.
When asked about his recruit

Winning
In 17 seasons as track coach at c
U. S. C., Weems Baskin has had
only one losing season and he's
thankful for a "Taylor made" 1
ironman act imported from Can
ada that has assured the 1966
team of winding up on the plus
side.
Bob Taylor's 16-point perform
ance in four events was the dif
ferenee in last Saturday's 75-70 win
at Clemson which gave the Gamte
cocks a 4-2 dual meet record with
only 'ruesday's meet at Duke re
maining before the Atlantic Coast
Conference Championthips sched
ulhd for May 13-14 at Carolina's
Rex Enright Athletic Center.
"After the North Carolina meet,
I told Coach Baskin I hoped he
never entered' me in the 880, the
mile and the two mile on the
same day again," Taylor said.
"But, as things turned out at
Clemson it was necessary and I'm
glad I had enough left to do
well. It was a big thrill."
The tall junior from I'ort
Credit, Ontario won the half mile
and the mile iat Clemson, then took
a second in the two mile but USC,
which battled back from 1:3 points
(own at one point, still trailed
69-67 with oinly the triple jump

While Taylor was the meet's
high scorer, Carolina had another
iron man act of sorts against
Clenson. Junior Art Swarts won
the discus Friday in the Penn Re
lays at Philadelphia with a meet
tying throw of 178 feet, 11%
inches, then flew back to Colum
bia in time to leave for Clemson
with the Gamecock team. At
Clemson he won the discus with a
throw of 173-9, and placed sec
ond in the shot put.
Thanks to the versatility of Bob
Taylor and the individual bril
liance of Art Swarts, Coach
Weems Baskin has racked up
another winning season
