Paul Dietzel's assuming of the football coaching duties
at USC has prompted sportswriters around the country to
comment-some rather caustically at that-on the move of
)ietzel from West Point to South Carolina.
Louisiana papers are already speculating on the opening
game of 1966 between USC and LSU, where Dietzel coached
the Tigers to national fame.
"Paul Dietzel has the South Carolina berth. Do you
know what his first assignment will be this fall? Pre
pare the Gamecocks to play Louisiana State University
in Death Valley, the scene of Paul's finest hours as coach
of the Bayou Bengals.
"What sort of an attraction would that be? Why,
LSU business manager of athletics, Jack Gilmore,
couldn't print enough tickets to satisfy the demand.
"Paul Dietzel vs. his former pupil, Charlie McClen
don. Dietzel returning to the school whose contract he
refused to honor . . . where he had his finest hours
the national championship . . . Halloween night
Pilly Cannon . . . Can't you hear the roar of the crowd
as Paul Dietzel races through the goalposts followed by
(amecocks instead of Fighting Tigers.
"You'd better put in your ticket order now."

And his former pupil, Charlie McClendon, who has
coached LSU to a 32-10-2 record and 3-1 bowl mark since
taking over for Dietzel, will have his forces ready for opening
day. you can bet.
Here is a sample of McClendon's theory as told to a
New Orleans sportswriter:
"McClendon places wanting to play ahead of speed, size
or anything else. BuL If he has to make a choice of physical
assets, Charlie Mac leans to speed.
"A boy might be the greatest weightlifter in the world,
Lut if he won't block and tackle, he can't do any good. Weights
don't fight back. Opposing linemen and backs do.
"How many chances does a large boy have to defend
himself while he's growing up? Take George Rice, LSU All
American last season. He's 6-3, 255 pounds. He probably
never had to have a fist fight in his life. Who'd want to pick
on him? George w%ill go through life without experiencing
that particular kind of enjoyment.
"And there was a blush on Charlie's face and a twinkle
in his eyes. But the twinkle may have been in anticipation
of his visitor from South Carolina."

It is small wonder why
sailing is one of the fastest
growing sports today. Col
leges across the nation, lucky
enough to be situated near a
large body of water, are or
ganizing a competitive sailing
club and team.
The University of South
Carolina is a strong contender
every year for the South At
lantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing
Association championship. Last
year the U.S.C. Sailing Team
captured that crown.
The Sailing Club has been
actively participating in regat
tas this school year and plans
to continue throughout the
summer sessions. Some regat
tas U.S.C. participated in in
cluded; Old Dominion, David
son, The Citadel. Annapolis,
Coast Guard Academy.
The Lightning, the 19 ft.
U.S.C. sailboat, was partially
rebuilt by members and has al
ready proven its proficiency in
the waters.
The Sailing Club is at the
present time recruiting new
members. No sailing experi
ence is necessary to join the
club. One of the main func
tions of the club is to interest
new members to a challenging,
ever-growing sport.

The Philadelphia Daily News for
April 14, 1966, carried an alarming
story written by Jack Kiser and
headlined: "Schayes reported out;
McGuire, Hannum in 76er Picture."
According to Kiser's story,
Dolph Schayes, the former NBA
great who coached Philadelphia's
76ers to the regular season East
ern Division crown, failed to com
mand the respect of any members
of the team and was axed by club
owner Irv Kogloff.
"Complete details on his
(Schayes') successor haven't been
worked out, but ex-warrior coach
Frank McGuire definitely is part
of the new set up. And Alex Han
num could join the picture within
the next few days.
He (Kosloff) has extended
offers to both and has received
favorable replies."
Kosloff. millionaire paper ty
coon, wants to hire both men-one
as a general manager, the other
as coach. Preferably, McGuire
would fill the former spot, with
Hannum, ex-San Francisco War
rior coach, getting the coaching
job in Philadelphia.
"Kosloff has been actively woo
ing McGuire for some time," re
ports Kiser, ". . . But Frank didn't
think it would be kosher to leave
his post as head basketball coach
at the University of South Caro
lina until the season was over
there."
"He definitely wants to return
to the pro game. and he has one
big thing going for him, namely

Wilt Chamberlain."
The story further reports that
Chamberlain contacted McGuire
several times during the past sea
son, urging him to accept the post
as Philadelphia general manager
'and now that the college basket
ball season is over and Golden
Boy Paul Dietzel has moved intb
South Carolina as head football
coach and athletic director, Mc
Guire is ready to move out."
That's about the gist of the
story, and anyone who cares any
thing for our athletic program
here at USC should be greatly dis
turbed. Needless to say, losing
a coach of Frank McGuire's caliber
would enormously diminish the
lustre which was recently added
to our program by the acquisition
of Dietzel.
Still, it's hard to blame McGuire
if he really does want to pull out.
Too many people have attempted
to hinder his efforts since he ar
rived here, particularly a small
