"To the roofs . . . to the roofs."
In olden times, this cry usually
meant that the city was burning
or under attack and the roof
proved to be an excellent place
from which to view the spectacle,
whatever it turned out to be. Now,
at USC, this cry means only one
thing . . . spring is here.

brings an abundancie of laughs by
merely wallowing in her fat and

entomb the choppiness of the film,
which all points to ill-direction.
Billed as the film which has

Thc Lotred One lives up to its pub

relatively funny, and the sets are
far from dead.

to the sun decks has arrived once
more. Students are just now begin
ning to purchase tanning oil, bath
ing suits, sun glasses and innu
merable other things that get us
ready to look respectable for our
first appearance on the beach.
Females are taking to crash
diets to loose that ten or so extra
pounds which crept up on them
during the winter. Males are work
ing-out with tension - s p r i n g s,
I weights and calisthenics to tighten
up their once godly torsos that are
sagging a good bit more than they
did this time last August.
Some students care less for how
they look and take to the knee
scraping, e 1 b o w - grinding (but,
nevertheless, fun) sport of side
walk s u r f i n g. Since USC has
more than its share of cement all
over the campus, we also have
more than our share of skate
boarders. As the weather gets
progressively warmer, more and
more of these vehicles appear until
the sidewalks are no longer a safe
place for pedestrians. Often great
bands of skateboarders will get
together and mold themselves into
what might resemble a group of
interwoven statues in a Roman
fountain and will roll down the
gentle slopes by Fraternity Row
causing confusion among passers
by and contusions among them
selves.

he may adopt the ever-popular
little f I y i n g saucer - like device
which often sails into classrooms
about this time of year-the Fris
bee.
Though some people think of
the Frisbee as a passing fad like
the hula hoop, coon-skin caps and
the Beatles ( ?), Carolina students
know deep in their hearts that the
Frisbee is one of those things like
the Mississippi River that, once it
catches on, ".just keeps on rollin'
along."
Whatever a student may choose
to do to express his exuberance over
the passing of winter-sun wor
shipping, skateboarding or what
have-you-you're bound to find
him doing it out of doors more and
more. So like it or lump it, sure
as you're born, spring is here!

Pranks fron
lv CAROL MUI,NAX
Staff Writer
It is early in the morning of
April 1", 196(, the anniversary
)f the birth of the Con federacy.
The sun has barely begun to rise.
The only sounds on the horseshoe
Rre some muffled voices emitting
from shadowy figures. At precisely
:45 a.m., a tremendous blaring
-ound bursts forth front one of the
tenements. It is "Dixie" playing
'n the tenth unit of the volume
dial of a stereo. On the flagpole,
below the American flag, is the
Confederate flag and below it is
a banner saying, "TlE SotIll
S.IALL RISE AGAIN."
This is a prank that hasn't been
pulled and probably never will be
-ause 'SC has a student body of
somile 10,000 and because there is
quite a history of disciplinary
measures to colsider before doing
it.
These incident . id measires
are both unique and extraordinary
:nd merit some recognition from
Aur present Student body.
On April 10, 1850, a large group
of students burned ill of their
chemistry books in a bonfire. It
was a riotoiis occasion which was
a protest aga in st their chemistry
professor who insisted they attend
make-up classes for time niissed
while ho was ill. The extra time
was coming from free cuts given
by another professor.

was probably the largest student
uprising in USC history. In 1852,
108 students agreed to leave school
unless t r u s t e e s took steps to
abolish a compulsory e o m r n o a s
system (concerning eating). When
the trustees refused, all 108 with
drew.
The big vogue in pranks oc
curred with the i n v e n t i o n of
"blackriding." Usually four or five
students half-masked and w i t i
faces blacked would dress in red
coats and gallop around at night
waving camphene torches. Fellow
students swarmed out of rooms
shouting and cheering the per
formers on. Another favorite )as
time was tin-pan serenades to un
popular professors.
It seems as if USC students
have calimed down considerably,
although there have been incidents
in recenlt years.
In 1!,63, during the annual USC
(lemson riot week, USC renegades
kidnapped a stagecoach improvised
as an advertising attraction at at
I o c a I eating establishment, and
dragged it tW the horseshoe. When
attempts to mllount it on M axcy
m11onumknent failed, the students left
it laning against the monument.
(CrtainflY this prank did no
harm. It at least added a little
spirit to life at Carolina. Basically,
students havy not changed, but
activ,ity has remailned dormant in
thei im1mediate past. With spring
fever(I seaon1, upon us now, who
knows what could happen!
