32 Leti For Spi By TONY SMITH Staff Writer The USC Gamecocks will begin spring football practice Saturday, March 19, with about 90 candi dates reporting to Coach Marvin Bass and his staff. The Gamecocks have 32 letter men returning from the 1965 squad which had a 5-5 overall rec Ord and shared the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship w i t h Duke. In addi tion, Joe Komo roski, a 1964 letterman as an interior l i n e - man, is back after a semes ter's absence from school. According to NCAA rules, an athlete may take part in a volun tary P. E. class before spring training if it is open to all male students and if notice of such a class is conspicuously posted on bulletin boards or In campus pub lications. The Coach mentioned that Phil Thorman and Terry Harmon had looked good during the class. Coach Bass emphasized that the purpose of spring training was to select the best players and to get them in the right positions. One important principle to remember, he added, is to make the good ath letes believe in themselves. lie also mentioned that there were some intangibles concerned with spring practice. Coach Bass said the emphasis in spring training would be on rundamentals - such as blocking, tackling and quickness drills. He also stressed getting rid of mis Lakes which have plagued USC in the past. He called these "anxiety mistakes" and attributed a conse quent inability to play "relaxed ball" to them. The coaching staff will experi ment with some changes in posi tions. Benny Galloway, all ACC defensive back last year will be moved to offense, and another de rensive back, Butch Reeves, will be given the chance at J. R. Wilburn's vacated split-end position. Returning candidates from last year's frosh team who were men tioned by Coach Bass were Gene Schwarting, Lynn Hodge, Jeff Stevens, Billy Anderson, Ronnie Palmer, and David Grant.
